Patrick McCaffery Discusses Freshman Season, Recruitment

IOWA CITY, Iowa – With his older brother Connor sidelined with a concussion Friday night, Patrick McCaffery knew he needed to pick up his game. The Iowa City West freshman did just that.

McCaffery scored 14 points in the second-ranked Trojans’ 77-71 victory against No. 6 Linn-Mar here at West High. His thunderous break-away dunk in the second crowd caused the crowd to explode and helped his team carry the momentum to victory.

“I definitely had to increase the scoring because obviously when (Connor) is out that goes down,” Patrick said. “Everybody knew they had to step up their game tonight and that’s what we did and that’s why we came out with the win.”

Patrick said the toughest adjustment to high school basketball has been the physicality and the speed of opposing defense. That said, he feels himself improving, especially on the defense.

His father, Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery, offered a scholarship to Patrick when he was in junior high. The the 6-foot-7 freshman hasn’t officially committed but it appears to be a formality.

“I mean, it’s not like I’m going to go anywhere else,” he said.
