The University of Iowa’s 2010-11 men’s basketball schedule was released today, and it includes seven weekend home dates and at least 18 regular season appearances on the Big Ten Network.
The Big Ten released the entire schedule, and for the fourth straight season, every league regular season and postseason conference tournament game will be nationally televised. Over 100 contests will be televised nationally on CBS, ESPN, ESPN2 or the Big Ten Network.
“With the schedule being released, that means the season isn’t too far away and that’s exciting,” said Head Coach Fran McCaffery. “We have a strong non-conference schedule that will prepare us for a demanding Big Ten schedule. The Big Ten is one of the top leagues in the country and that’s reflected in how many opponents we have in the preseason rankings. We have a solid core of talented players who can compete in this league and we’re excited to start the season.”
Iowa’s seven weekend home dates include four conference games. Weekend home contests are against Illinois-Springfield (Nov. 7), South Dakota State (Nov. 14), Idaho State (Dec. 4), Indiana (Jan. 23), Minnesota (Feb. 13), Michigan (Feb. 19 or 20) and the season finale against Purdue (March 5 or 6).
The Hawkeyes open Big Ten play with three of its first four games at home for the second consecutive year. Iowa welcomes Illinois to Iowa City on Dec. 29 to open conference action, followed by a pair of games against teams that shared the Big Ten title a year ago. The Hawkeyes entertain Ohio State (Jan. 4) and then visit Purdue (Jan. 9) for their first conference road contest. The Black and Gold then return home to host Northwestern (Jan. 12).
For the second consecutive season, Iowa will play Wisconsin (home) and Penn State (away) only once during the regular season. The Hawkeyes’ game at the Nittany Lions will be, Jan. 26 and will host the Badgers, Feb. 9.
Iowa receives two “byes” during the conference season, and they fall on Jan. 2 and Feb. 23.
Fourteen of Iowa’s 18 conference games will appear on the Big Ten Network. Iowa’s road game at Indiana (Feb. 5) will be televised on either ESPN or ESPN2. Television information for Iowa’s home dates against Michigan (Feb. 19 or 20) and Purdue (March 5 or 6) and a road contest at Illinois (Feb. 26 or 27) will be determined at a later date.
The Big Ten Conference Tournament (March 10-13) will take place at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for the fourth straight year, with tournament games airing on the Big Ten Network, ESPN, ESPN2 and CBS.
The Hawkeyes will play seven of their 12 non-league regular-season contests in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, two true road games and three contests on a neutral court.
Iowa will first hit the hardwood Nov. 7 in an exhibition against Illinois-Springfield. The regular season tips off Nov. 14 when the Hawkeyes entertain South Dakota State. It will mark the first meeting between the two teams since 1962. On just one day rest, Iowa will return to action against Louisiana-Monroe (Nov. 16).
After two home games to start the season, Iowa will travel to the Virgin Islands for the three-game Paradise Jam in St. Thomas. The Hawkeyes open tournament play against Xavier (Nov. 19) and then play either Alabama or Seton Hall (Nov. 20 or 21). Iowa will conclude the tournament against either, Long Beach State, St. Peter’s Old Dominion or Clemson (Nov. 22). The tournament features three teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last year: Xavier, Clemson and Old Dominion.
After returning to the states, Iowa will host SIU-Edwardsville (Nov. 26) before traveling to Winston-Salem, NC, to face Wake Forest, another NCAA Tournament team from a year ago, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge (Nov. 30).
Iowa will conclude its non-conference slate with four of five games in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes welcome Idaho State (Dec. 4) and then back-to-back games against in-state rivals Northern Iowa (Dec. 7) and Iowa State (Dec. 10). Iowa closes its non-league schedule at Drake (Dec. 18) and at home against Louisiana Tech (Dec. 21).
