Payne should improve. But Iowa needs another point guard for next year. Should probly always have three guys that can play point, with two of those being true point guards

I do have one other point: Don't discredit all the experience that Payne got this year. They do have a PG that has college experience. He did get tired and it showed in some games. I just don't know why people are so down on the players that are there, am I simply not seeing something? They have quality guys coming in to play and all indications are that Roy Marble is extremely intellegent and Brust can play both guard spots. You have Payne, Gatens, May in place in the backcourt now you have five guys who can handle the ball and lets not forget about McCabe. There are also some unsigned PG's out there that I feel could really help, Anthony Henderson Jr., from Toledo Start High School, late qualifier and people have kind of stayed away from him because of that. 6-2, athletic and simply wants to win, fast paced player, great in the open court and likes to attack the basket. City League Player of the year and first team All-State Division 1 (largest) in Ohio.

I am not disagreeing with you Jon, I just don't feel now is the time to add a JUCO player. If adding one or even two add for the 2011 class. The "top" JUCO guys are going somewhere already. That is why I brought up McCallum and Zeigler, two quality top 100 kids that want to be part of something other than just play basketball somewhere, if that weren't the case, I think McCallum would have stuck with the Miami commitment from last year and Zeigler would have already went to Duke.
Nick DeWitz and Jermain Davis are two JUCO players that makes me cringe, they came in and didn't turn out too well.
You make excellent points on the Bball players that have worked out, my question back is how many were signed in April or in the Summer?
Justin Johnson turned out very well for Alford, I wish he would have been redshirted his first year, unless he couldn't have been. As I said originally, there are pros and cons. Huggins lived with JUCO players at Cincinnati, but has he recruited one since being at WVU? Duke, up until this year, had never had a JUCO player under Coach K, believe me, I am not comparing Iowa to these schools, but philosophy. If a coach believes in going the JUCO route, more power too him, but me as a fan and my philosophy I don't like all the roster turnover. A player here and there, sure, no problems, but evaluate, evaluate, evaluate, don't bring in a kid from those ranks just to fill a roster spot, if I am not mistaken, doesn't Iowa now have 12 scholarships filled? Cole is a senior next year and Tucker's is open, if there are any others, I would like to know. Do you want a short recruiting class next year? I don't know the answer, but me pesonally, I don't believe Iowa really has any need to go that direction today, maybe they do tomorrow, but they have players and help is on the way. The one thing I do stick to and I can see why people are pushing a point guard is, you simply can never have enough quality guards. The JUCO track record isn't bad, but look at the teams those players were on. I could debate all day, love talking sports, wish I could do it all day everyday and as always:

Johnson, Brown are a couple from the Miller days...big time scorers...Kevin Gamble turned out pretty good in the 1980's...Jaacks was a solid contributor..Val Barnes was a Juco I believe...was Jerry Dennard?

BTW, in Football, Andre Tippet was pretty salty...so were Brad Banks, CJ Jones, Marshal Yanda, etc.

I just feel it is a bigger crapshoot with JUCO players than high schoolers due to number one, why are they there in the first place and two, if you are going to struggle, struggle with players you can have for four years and mold them how you like. I saw people giving some love to a JUCO PG that ended up at North Dakota State and fans out there were wanting this guy, but at the same time questioning the abilities of the current roster...hmmm, doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me. How many JUCO players has Iowa recruited and how many have made real impacts? I don't remember too many, yeah, Evans comes to mind, but there were issues with that team if you reember, the favotism and the upper/lower classmen didn't get along. Blame who you want, but Evans was part of the upperclassmen of those teams. Doug Thomas was a solid player, Erik Hansen was a solid player. I guess, it just depends on what the coach is looking for, there are a lot of mediocre players at the JUCO level that let programs down.

Here's how you fill Carver again:
1. Win
2. Have a lottery for the students and have them apply for season tickets and give them to them for free. Also, put them behind the benches.
3. Cut ticket prices in half. They aren't selling anyway so open it up so people who have very little disposable income in this god forsaken economy can afford to go to a game. (Michigan sells packages for $80 you get 5 games, plus a 'free' one the games: MSU, OSU, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the free one was Cleveland State), not a bad deal.
4. Do what you have just done get a politician and hard worker for a coach. Fran knows what to say and knows what fans want to hear right now. Integrity and Uptempo.
5. Make the atmosphere better inside Carver: Upbeat music, goofy halftime shows and fun contests at timeouts.

7th in the league is all the higher you can see them, if Iowa had depth last season the win all those close games in the league. With depth and players being content and enjoying it, they have the potential to win 9 games in league and maybe steal some big home wins and still best the scrubs on the road.
Not saying they are going to get higher than 7th, but I could see them finishing higher.

Say NO to JUCO players! There are two very fine prospects in the State of Michigan unsigned, one happens to be a PG (Ray McCallum), the other a very smart basketball player and good all around player (Trey Zeigler). Fran should fly out and talk to both of these kids, each top 100 players and D1 coaches sons that want to be cornerstones to rebuild teams.
I have seen McCallum play and he is better than advertised.
One thing you are forgetting, I have also been keeping tabs on Roy Marble Jr., he played PG for his team all season. 25ppg, 7ast, 3stls at 6-5 with quickness.
There are so many pros and cons to JUCO players and unless you don't plan on them having a large role or can't count on them to have a large role initially, then stay away.
Devon Archie would have been a contributor this year, athletically and defensively, Iowa has no defensive low post presence, that is a big deal, so I am hopeful we see that next year, if so, it is worth the scholarship.
On the Fuller note, let him go, I don't totally agree he is the best player. When it comes down to it, he fouls a lot and does miss a lot of easy shots, very hot and cold.
Coach Fran, head East to Michigan, give the coaches kids a talk to and see if you can reel one in to a rebuilding job that everyone wants to see.
GO HAWKS!
