Hawks Hit Bottom..Again

Hawks Hit Bottom..Again

The Iowa Men’s basketball team scored just 40 points on Wednesday night in their 67-40 loss at Wisconsin.  It was the third straight road game where Iowa failed to score more than 19 points in the first half, and it was the third straight road game that was pretty much over by halftime.

Iowa trailed Wisconsin 36-16 at the break Wednesday night.  It trailed at Northwestern 39-19 last week and at Purdue 34-15.  The bottom line; Iowa has not been a competitive Big Ten basketball team in those three games, at the least.  There have been more.

The Hawks trailed 12-10 with 13:03 to play in the first half last night.  That’s when Wisconsin went on a 20-0 run over the next 06:57 of the game.  Here is another way to look at it.  I turned my car radio off at that point to go in to a church to pick my daughter up from her usual Wednesday night activities.  When I came out 15 real minutes later, Iowa had just made its first field goal since I had left the car.

And with that, I turned off the radio, had some ice cream and a nice talk with my daughter, took her home and got her to bed and I went to sleep myself around 8:45.

I feel refreshed today, so I guess I have Todd Lickliter to thank for that good night of sleep…because I could not come up with one reason to watch the second half.  It’s getting harder to care about something when you don’t really believe it has much chance to be successful, and Iowa on the road this year, with the exception of the 15 point win at Indiana, has not been all that competitive.

There are probably a few NAIA teams that could score more first half points against Big Ten competition than Iowa has in its last three games.

No, I haven’t forgotten that I picked this team to win between nine and eleven games this year, and between three and five in the Big Ten.  They are just where I felt they would be, which also meant they would lose more games than any Iowa team in history.  Expecting something is one thing, but actually seeing it play out in cold reality is another.

I kept wondering last night ‘how will four freshman make THAT big of a turnaround next year?’

What should we expect, as Iowa is at its all time low point for losses in a season (20, with 21 coming up this weekend at Minnesota)?

We’ll have plenty of time to get to that, as this season will likely end in the first round of the Big Ten tournament next week with another loss to Michigan.

Another sign of how low Iowa basketball has fallen. KCRG has always sent a team to follow the Hawks at the Big 10 tournament. I saw something where they said that they were not following the team to Indiana for the BTT this year.

This article really kind of says it all better than I could have myself. I said a couple months ago that I would not be looking so much at the W/L record as I would the team improving and being competetive. After being blown out in the first half of several of our most recent road games, with just a recent home win over lowly Indiana, how many people can honestly look at this team and say that they are improving and being competetive? I just am not seeing it, and I agree that I also look at this particular team and wonder how they can suddenly win 17-18+ games next year. I’m at a loss.

    Jon,
Last Sunday I took my son and family to the Indiana game. Before the game I read and I kept thinking of your article last week that stated you wanted off the roller coaster. Then I watched a young team work their butt off, a coach who faced a serious illness coach, watched over 100 student athletes recognized and cheered like crazy throught the eyes of my 10 year old son-with positve excited hawkeye fans. I kept thinking – jon stay off the roller coaster- these hawkeyes do not deserve your scorn, you – to me – lost sight of youth/scholar atheletes and the importance of being a hawk!

Then Monday my son and I got up got ready for school and we were listening to you and daece. My son said “all these guys do-every morning-is talk about themselves! Never sports….please turn it.

So when, I believe, hawkeye nation b-ball turns around-a good picture of what it can be is Wisconsin – please keep off the ride or get supportive.

Go hawks and I love the way they play, with heart! Everday….I believe!

    dear onetruehawkfan,
the truth is the truth…we work hard..most of the time…to me they have looked bored out there a lot of the time late in the year. We are really bad, that is the truth. We may not get as many wins as our football team. You have to be blind not to see they look uninspired on the court at times. You are lucky you took your son to the Indiana game, he got to see them play the best they have all year. Bottom line, we are really bad, no one is hopping off the bandwagon..just stating the truth and their opinion. Jon, most of us know you are always on the bandwagon, but its people like this guy that think they are a better fan because they cheer louder that really get to me…

Okay — that was my first post, ever, and certainly pertentious. (for instance my chosen name).

Like everyone, I am certainly frustrated, and I lash out when I hurt……

That being said, I was struck that Sunday that these are kids, 18-21?, and they are students first–they recognized them at half–the best part of the day–many, many 4 year all-Americans.

I disagree they are disinterested, but we can differ on perspective — but I do feel many hawk fans need to be reminded of who and what we are cheering for, overmatched freshmen and sophmores — who were blown out many times yes, but also put up some pretty good fights!! Those are who I am cheering for. (not louder then you or jon-I am sure)

Ok the kids are young and not at fault but come on,,Steve Alford is going to be coach of the year, not saying we take him back, but lets face it we need a coach who brings an entertaining style of play and players that will make us competitive again. I mean if we couldn’t tolerate Alford, how can we keep the same coach we have now???

Wow, after the minnesota game, I think I will retire from sharing any opinion on hawk hoops!

Overmatched on so many levels, and of all teams to suffer our worse loss, Minnesota!

I am going to hibernate for the next 8 months and hope, hope, hope for next year.
