The Iowa Hawkeyes were able to weather the winter storm that hit the state on Tuesday night in making it to the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls. Unfortunately they were buried beneath 20 points from Panther guard Kwadzo Ahelegbe as the Panthers cruised to a 67-50 win.
Adam Koch and Jordan Eglseder added 10 points and UNI committed just five turnovers as the Hawkeyes gave the ball away 16 times on the night.
Matt Gatens led Iowa with 18 points, including 4 of 6 from downtown. He was the only Hawkeye to break into double figures, as Cully Payne and Anthony Tucker had nine points apiece. The three players, Iowa’s three primary ballhandlers, accounted for 12 of Iowa’s 16 giveaways.
Brennan Cougill played just six minutes as he continues to recover from an ailment.
Iowa hit just 9 of 26 shots from three point range, and made just 10 shots from inside the arc. Iowa was also just three of eight from the foul line, which is a poor percentage and too few trips to the charity stripe.
The loss moves Iowa to 3-6 on the season with a road trip to Iowa State coming up on Friday night. UNI dropped Iowa State last week, so this is just the third time UNI has topped the Hawkeyes & Cyclones in the same season.
