Rob Howe of HawkeyeInsider.com tweeted on Monday night that Williamsburg lineman Austin Blythe has verbally committed to the Iowa football team. Here is a link to his Scout.com profile.
Blythe’s commitment is still relatively early in the natural recruiting calendar, but there were whispers over the winter that he had pulled the trigger back when the snow was on the ground. Most people felt it was just a matter of time before he made it official for Iowa.
Stanford, Wisconsin, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and others had offered Blythe, and he’s the type of player that would have had more attention his way were it not seen as such a lock for him to end up in the black and gold; his grandparents are significant financial supporters of the University.
Blythe won a state title in wrestling this past year and is a candidate for both sides of the line of scrimmage. He is listed at 6-3, 275 so his future is likely going to be on the interior of the line; offensive guard or defensive tackle. Never rule out center as a possibility for any interior offensive lineman that Kirk Ferentz recruits, either.
