11:00am central time kickoffs have been a part of Big Ten football for quite some time, and most of the league’s conference games have been played in that window in recent years.
The reason for that was due to ESPN/ABC having the exclusive 2:30pm central kick window…but that is no longer exclusive property to those networks, which means you are going to see 2:30 kickoffs appear on the Big Ten Network (or BTN, since they changed their name to that acronym this past week).
The 2:30 games I have been to have seemed to have an extra ‘buzz’ to them. That could be figurative and literal, as the later starting time allows tailgaters more time to do what it is they choose to do…it also makes it easier on folks traveling to Kinnick who live a few hours away so they don’t have to leave their houses at 5am…or earlier in some instances.
For those of you that don’t make it to Kinnick on a regular basis for whatever reason, and you take the day to watch as many Big Ten games as you can, this will be a benefit, too. The league won’t have to load up with so many 11am games, spreading the weekly schedule out across more television ‘windows’.
What do you think of the likelihood of fewer 11am starts and more 2:30 starts for home games at Kinnick? Sound off below.
