Has Ferentz Hired an OC?

Has Ferentz Hired an OC?

According to longtime Austin-American Statesman columnist Kirk Bohls, Iowa has hired an offensive coordinator:

Bohls sites Bobby Burton’s tweet on Monday afternoon related to Davis being a leading candidate.

From our item on Monday:

Davis was one of the assistants that was offered up to appease the burnt orange football gods on the heels of Texas’ 5-7 2010 campaign. Davis ‘resigned’ and two other Texas assistants ‘retired’. Davis was the Longhorns offensive coordinator for 13 seasons at Texas but had been with Mack Brown dating back to the 1980′s.

Davis’ offense won a national title for Texas in 2005 with Vince Young as the trigger man and made it to the national title game two years ago with Colt McCoy under center. Those offenses were different from each other, as was the offense Texas ran with Major Applewhite under center, before Vince Young took the reigns. Davis won the Broyles Award in 2005, an honor which goes to the national assistant coach of the year.

He was the quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M between 1978-1984 before Mack Brown hired him as his wide receivers coach at Tulane in 1985. Davis would be named Tulane’s head coach in 1986 after Brown left. He remained there for three years before becoming the offensive coordinator at Arkansas and Georgia. He was reunited with Brown at North Carolina in 1996 and went with him to Texas in 1998. Davis will be 61 in April.

Some folks have been digging up posts from Texas fans who were upset with Davis’ playcalling skills over his final year with the Longhorns. The guy has been around the game a long, long time. When things aren’t going well for a program that has an established and mostly respected head coach, the offensive coordinator is the predictable next target of ire.

In 2010, Texas’ offense ranked 58th in the nation, gaining 382.50 yards per game. By the way, Iowa ranked 57th that year at 382.92 yards per game.

The 2010 season saw Texas trying to replace arguably their greatest quarterback in program history, Colt McCoy. The Longhorns had tailored their offense around McCoy’s amazing accuracy and skill set, so things were much different in 2009 than they were in 2010.

Never mind the fact their defense ranked 48th in the nation in points allowed at 23.67 per game. Before you blame that on the offense, keep in mind the Longhorns averaged more than 30 minutes per game in time of possession, so more than half the game.

Is he as intriguing as Tom Moore? Probably not. He has a lot of experience and likely some recruiting ties down in the Lone Star State, too.

He ran a lot of spread his last several years at Texas and I doubt we’ll see anything like that at Iowa. I don’t expect much to change other than a few wrinkles and play calling tendencies.

If Davis is hired, what are your thoughts?

Great hire. This guy has coached at the highest of highs. Has a national championship and molded offenses around much different types of QB’s. He was the scapegoat and nothing more.

To be honest, I am happy with the hire.  My only complaint was the time it took to hire the OC, but I think Greg Davis will be a strong coach for the Hawks!  He comes from a program that is much bigger than Iowa’s, he’s an outsider, and he has a track record of success, all things we have been asking for.  I just hope he keeps a home in Texas so he can stay close to some of those recruits!:)

I may not love the hire, but he is better than KOK. I look for things to improve a little.

  • Herky71

I like the hire and think Davis will be good for the Hawks, he did a lot of good with the ‘Horns. I only hope Kirk let’s Davis have some freedom with offense, I’m not counting on it to happen, but I guess if your not at least going to consider letting Davis use his exsperience and knowledge why bother trying to get a well established OC.

Were there ethical/judgment/player management concerns with the offense during his time at Texas?  I don’t follow non-Big Ten teams enough to know, but it seems like I remember Texas having its share of scandals.  Is my memory wrong?

  • ChosenChildren

I think this is a great hire. Very exciting

    Snore.

Davis will be a good hire, he won’t be running a spread at iowa, but will help with the development of the QBs.  It also shows that Iowa is becomming a marquee program when you can get a OC from a traditional top 10 program to come to Iowa.  I don’t think Davis was the problem, as Texas wasn’t much better last year and he was made to be the scape goat.

  • AustinHawk

Live in Austin so I was inundated with the Davis story. He is a pass first OC. Mack Brown wanted to be a power football team, like Alabama, & that conflicted with Davis’ philosophy. Would be the same with Ferentz. Could Kirk be looking for a warm (older) body to until Brian is ready to step in?

  • Jethro1hawkfan

Lets see how he performs on the field.  I will give anyone a chance after years of KOK!

  • 95Hawkeye01

I was really in the Erik Campbell camp, wanting him to have a shot. I hope we don’t lose him – he has done a ton of good things for us. Having said that, I think this could be a great hire, not sure what we are going to see from the offense. I guess we will see how much Kirk dictates to the OC when the offense takes the field. Was KOK really muzzled by Kirk as much as I assume he was? If the offense is no different we will have to say yes.

  • Same-o, Same-o

I’m thinking that along with the departure of Norm and Ken, Mr. Ferentz should also have left.  If you ever want anything to really change at Iowa, it will have to start with the Head Coach.  Think of all the problems we’ve had at Iowa with star players leaving the program.  That ultimately goes back on the Head Coach.

KF demands loyalty and a quiet tongue.  That much we know is true.  How many times has something happened in the Hawkeye family and we never heard a word about it or what happened?

My question is this, if KF did give a prelim nod to hiring GD, would he pull it knowing that it had to be GD that leaked the info to someone, who told the Austin Stateman?

Does anyone know what is being said on the Hawkeye Cruise?

  • hawk4ever

All in the family. Good post AustinHawk you are right Brian will be the OC in the future then Head coach down the road. The rich get richer…..

But can they win that is the key another 6-7 win season is not good enough and people will start barking again

  • Larry Flint

What many folks don’t seem to get is that not everybody aspires to eventually become a head coach.  When you start shooting for a head coach or OC/DC gig … all of a sudden you’re in a much higher profile position and your job security tends to to WAY down.

For anybody who has actually done their homework on Campbell, there is a pretty long string of evidence that suggests that he’s a pretty low key guy who likes teaching kids.  It doesn’t seem like he likes to muck around with all the politics crap that goes along with the higher positions.  Many, many Michigan fans are on record stating that Soup seemed content to remain a career assistant coach.  Given the observation that he’s turned down several opportunities for head coaching and/or OC gigs, I’m inclined to believe that rumor mill.

Thus, I’d suggest that many Iowa fans entertain the very real possibility that Soup simply doesn’t want the OC gig.

And, even if the above were not so, it also seems pretty clear that Ferentz wanted a guy with a track record of developing QBs.

  • QsDad

I would rather see Tom Moore, older, wiser and better

  • IowaFan81

Really?  Which star players are you talking about that left because of the coaching?  It couldn’t have been because they got into trouble with the law and didn’t want to have to work there way back up the ladder.

  • IowaFan81

Right on, it’s known that he’s been offered higher profile positions, but has never left.

  • hawk9

    Agreed.

  • dchawk75

I don’t see how you can say this hire took too long.   If you want to do it like the clones and hire some guy from Upper Iowa through love at first sight, that’s one way to do things.   Alternatively, you seek the counsel of football people, interview candidates and hire the one you are most comfortable with which is what Ferentz appears to have done.   Seems like a good approach to me.

He got blamed for the overall record of the team at Texas just like KOK did here.  KOK was a good coach and I’m sure GD is a good coach as well.  Texas fans, much like Iowa fans, think that they are entitled to 10 win seasons every year and if they don’t get it they want everyone fired.  Idiocy.  Sometimes it doesn’t break your way.  As I like to say, the other team has coaches and players that are trying hard too.

People need to realize that expecting 9-10 wins a year (or more) EVERY year is unrealistic.  Iowa has to overcome a lot just to compete with the likes of OSU, PSU, Michigan, etc.  I believe that Iowa has one of the lowest D1 athlete production rates in the nation, yet we still manage to compete with the big boys.  Under Hayden Fry, a winning season and a bowl game was a good year.  Under KF, it’s grounds for termination.  It gets old.
Fans are holding Iowa to a standard that is too high – and they don’t even realize they do that BECAUSE of the success that KF and company had in the past.

I just wish fans would support the coaches and drop the constant criticism.  One day, you will look back and realize how good you had it.  (See:  Iowa Basketball)

Given the disappointing direction in the last 2 seasons, I think it speaks volumes about our program when the leading candidates for OC are a guy who coached Peyton Manning to a Super Bowl and a guy who coached Vince Young to a national title.  I would be very happy with Davis and hope that Ferentz will loosen up the reins a bit, especially if the rumors of a Ferentz/O’Keefe rift are true.  I don’t think we need to abandon the pro-set in order to look like Hawaii circa June Jones, but just open it up a little bit and be more creative in the play calling.  I’m especially excited about what Davis could do with Jake Rudock.

His ties to Texas should help us add more depth as he can recruit there while Ferentz works Ohio/Pennsylvania and Wilson continues to open up the DC Metro pipeline.

  • IowaHusker79

I agree with you. Ferentz should have been let go as well. I mean, he’s been at Iowa 13 years and what he’s accomplished is about the same as Hayden Fry. His teams win enough games to get into a bowl game. No conference championship in HOW many years? No appearances in the national championship game. The door was left wide open with Michigan and Ohio State being down and once again Iowa stumbles to another 7 win season. And just like Chicago Cubs fans, the Hawkeye fans raise their beers and say “Wait till next year.” I guess Iowa football fans must enjoy mediocrity.

  • IowaHusker79

If you want Iowa fans to stop criticizing Ferentz and the Iowa football program then get prepared for more 7 win seasons. Because Ferentz is locked in until 2020 and he hasn’t proven that he can consistently win 10 or more games a year on a regular basis, I guess supporting mediocrity will somehow change Iowa’s fortunes. Kirk Ferentz is no different than Hayden Fry. His teams win enough games to get into a bowl game but they rarely win the conference and they never play for a national championship. Hey, if that’s what you want, go for it. Being a Nebraska fan who lives near Iowa City, I do not like it when my Huskers win just 7 or 8 games. If Pelini can win at least 9 games a year every year playing a much tougher schedule than Iowa, why can’t Ferentz?  Don’t settle. Demand more. If you don’t, then you’ll be looking at 7 wins a year. And by the way, after this upcoming cakewalk of a schedule for Iowa in 2012, the 2013 and 2014 schedules are brutal. The Hawks might be lucky to win half their games. Just sayin’.

Just because I choose not to spout off constant negativity and criticism of things I don’t have expertise in doesn’t mean I “support mediocrity”.  It means I understand, just like any good coach does, that everything has to roll right for ANY team to win 9-10 games or more a year.  It hasn’t gone our way 2 years in a row, but the year before we won the Orange Bowl.  Same coaches, same system.  And from ’09 to ’10 many of the same players.  But people say “well, we should win like that every year.”  Well, winning is not a birthright, every team has to go out and earn it and sometimes you fall short.
I bet you could make more at your job, or be a better parent, have more success, etc, but if you don’t does that mean you “support mediocrity” in your life?  No, because you don’t control every last thing and not everything will go your way despite your best efforts.
My point is this – trust the people that got us to this point.  Support them.  Reinforce them.  Help them.  The criticism and negativity helps no one and only tells our players and potential recruits that Iowa fans are actually only going to support you if you win.  That’s not what Iowa is about.  We are bigger than that.

You assume that because he makes a lot of money that he isn’t trying hard anymore.  My point is, you equate wins to the coaches effort level, and that is a logical fallacy.  We lost a trap game by 1 point and another in 3 OT (both rivalry games).  If we win those we aren’t even talking right now.  Are you going to tell me we lost because KF didn’t try hard enough?  Please.  Spare me.  You and I both know that is asinine, and if you don’t, you should know better.

Criticism and negativity rarely beget positive results.  Our coaches know that.  Most good leaders know that.  Our fans – they obviously forgot or don’t know that.  Think about it.

  • justsaying

when u are one of the top 5 paid coaches in the country, fans expect to see better seasons than we have the last 2 years. if u can’t produce 10 win seasons with regularity then u need to look at restructuring ferentz’s contract. iowa hasnt smelled anything close to a national championship, until then i think ferentz is being overpaid.

  • Jimbo

Hawk fans are simply being realistic.  It’s not like Iowa pumps out a bunch of 5-star studs every year.

  • timbo41

You same-o same-0 need to find anew team to follow be clone fan please.
