Rob Howe of HawkeyeInsider.com reports that Cole Fisher of Nebraska has verbally committed to the Iowa program.
Cole’s father Todd played for the Huskers and his brother Sean is currently on the team. As Howe points out, the Huskers had told Cole they were taking just one linebacker this year, so he wouldn’t be getting an offer from the Huskers.
He is 6-3, 200-pounds and if you are into star gazing, Scout.com ranks him as a two-star while Rivals.com has him as a three star. He had a known offer from Kansas at this point in time. He plays for Millard North, home of former Hawkeyes Seth Olsen, Adam Shada and Jeff Tarpinian.
Iowa was the first school to offer Fisher back in early November of 2009. Fisher tore his ACL around Christmas of ’09, but that didn’t change Iowa’s attitude on a scholarship offer. Keep in mind that Iowa has kept their commitment to players that verbally commit to them and later suffer an injury, but that wouldn’t have been a the case in this instance. Still, the Hawks stuck with Fisher through his injury, and he pulled the trigger for the Hawkeyes. Is it a bit of a gamble? Maybe, as everyone heals differently, but in today’s day and age, ACL’s are hardly the athletic career death sentence they once were. However, the Hawkeyes showed their loyalty to Fisher, while other schools were holding back, waiting to see how he looked this fall after he gets back on the field from his injury.
Coincidentially, the Hawkeyes stuck with another Millard North player after he suffered a high school injury, in Shada.
