Nebraska To the Big Ten?

Nebraska To the Big Ten?

Sorry of the headline was a bit misleading; no, there is no imminent announcement.

But Nebraska Athletics Director Tom Osborne gave some quotes Friday that are worth filing away:

“I haven’t heard anything from (Big Ten commissioner) Jim Delany, so you don’t know exactly what they’re thinking,” Osborne said Thursday. “We haven’t entered into any formal talks with anybody right now. We’re focusing on the Big 12. But I don’t think that means if somebody wanted to pick up the phone and call us, that we’d hang up on them. You listen.”

The entire article, with some commentary from Steven M. Sipple, can be read here. Seriously, give that article a read. Sipple, a person whom I have met and spent some time with and find to be an agreeable guy, might be the lone realist in the state of Nebraska. He understands that while the Cornhuskers have a rich tradition, they are lagging behind their contemporaries in the Big Ten and SEC, and the Big 12 does not treat Nebraska the same way it treats Texas or Oklahoma.

Another reality would be this; If Texas A&M could turn things around, Nebraska might be 4th in that league’s pecking order.

Osborne and Sipple see the writing on the wall; the Big Ten is going to do something, and the Pac 10 might, too. Colorado has always seemed like a possible Pac 10 expansion team. They have a history of recruiting Southern California. Denver, which is less than an hour south of Boulder, is a western Ellis Island, the new Gateway to the West.

Dominoes are going to begin to fall within the next 12 months or so, and the Cornhuskers could be caught with their pants around their stalks without the same capital that an Oklahoma or a Texas has.

Enter the Big Ten…

Nebraska is a small population state and it would not bring much, if any, bang for its TV buck, which is something the league has to look at and will. Their olympic sports would fit in nicely, but theirs isn’t an academic home run, either.

But let’s get real here; football is king. Football revenue is king. Nebraska has one of the best traveling fanbases in the sport, and they would be a solid addition to the bowl structure the league enjoys, and provide some western balance to a realigned league from a geographical sense.

Envision this sort of a set up for football:

DIVISION A
Michigan
Ohio State
Michigan State
Purdue
Indiana
Northwestern

DIVISION B
Iowa
Nebraska
Penn State
Wisconsin
Illinois
Minnesota

I realize that PSU is the farthest school to the east and would play in a mostly western division. But PSU would have just three road trips to the ‘far west’ at worst per year, which can happen right now.

As for Iowa, it would be likely that they would be in the same division as Nebraska, which would mean the Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers would play each year. Now that is something I would very much look forward to, and the rivalry that could come from that would be something special, especially on sports talk radio in Des Moines.

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said on Friday that the league has not spoken with anyone.

He said the following, among other things: “There were reports a few weeks ago about one institution [Pitt],” Delany told WSCR. “This week, there were reports about another institution [Texas]. I can report to you guys we haven’t had any informal or formal interface with any institutions. We’re in the process of an internal study, and we’ll take those studies and those options and talk to our athletic directors, who then will pass on their thoughts to our presidents. I hope, by the spring or the summer, we’ll have an idea of what it is we’d like to try to do, if anything.”

I don’t think the Big Ten is going to sit by and do nothing, not with the winds of change blowing the way they are (Sorry, Scorpions). So the league might have an idea on what direction it wants to go here in a few months…then more months would come and go as the league talked with a few schools it has targeted.

I’d still prefer Notre Dame join the Big Ten over anyone. That would be best for the league and another great team to play, as Iowa and the Irish would likely be in the same division. Texas also makes financial sense, and that is putting it lightly. But if not those two, then I hope Nebraska is someone near the top of the list…that would add more flavor to an Iowa football season.

to riverhawk62-Now you’re just going from stupid to funny. Too bad your statements are so outlandish. No one will ever know if Pelini would beat Ferentz because the two teams don’t play each other. I don’t know who would win if they played each other this upcoming season. You have to remember, Pelini still has at least half his team made up of Callahan’s players who were not recruited to run Pelini’s style of offense. Ferentz has been at Iowa eleven years. He’s had plenty of time to establish his system and he’s had eleven consecutive recruiting classes. Give Pelini eleven recruiting classes and see where the Huskers are at. Comparing this year’s Nebraska team to this year’s Iowa team is like comparing apples to oranges. The same thing happened back in 1999 and 2000. Frank Solich took a loaded team into Iowa City and kicked Kirk Ferentz’s Iowa Hawkeyes asses! But in defense of Ferentz, he was stuck with Hayden Fry’s players. It takes at least four years to get the previous coach’s players out of the system. But that’s what is so remarkable about Pelini. He’s taken a previous coach’s players and in two years won 19 games, including two bowl games. Came within 4 points of going 13-1 this past year. And didn’t lose by much the previous year. Looks like we have a head coach just down interstate 80 over in Lincoln who has done an incredible job and has awoken a sleeping giant and Ferentz and the rest of the Iowa fans are thinking, ‘oh shit, not again!” Face it man, you are scared to think what just might happen in a year or two at Nebraska and the thought of Nebraska joining the Big Ten makes you shake in fear because you see Pelini recruiting 4 and 5 star blue chip athletes and winning and you see Nebraska glory coming back and what scares you the most – that Nebraska swagger is BACK!!! I just have one thing to say to you if Nebraska joins the Big Ten – WELCOME TO HELL !!!

  • Lukhawk

And you Husker should know how it is to be dominated by Iowa wrestling. Iowa has a dynasty of its own that Neb will never ever touch…..ever!!! You will NEVER have a team in any sport that remotely compares to IOWA’S wrestling program..EVER!!
Big Twelve North is like saying the Big Ten adds another school and Iowa has to beat MINN ISU ILL PURDUE Rutgers every year to play in conference championship. And when was the last time Iowa had another team hang 70 points on them? It’s guys like you that make it hard for other fans to give Neb the credit they deserve.

  • riverhawk62

Huskergal—really, now i mean really………..W/ the scheduale you play/have played, there is no way your above .500 in the BIG10.Iowa,OSU,Northwestern,Wisconsin,Indiana,PSU,MSU,Purdue all beat the bigred.Illinois,Mnn.Mich.,maybe,maybe not.BUT,the most OUTLANDISH situation NOW,is how for soooo long, you cornsuckers laffed @ the BIG10,but,now realize, for survival sake, you future MAY hinge on being a part of a conf. you have been so jealous of for so long.It will be a REAL treat to see the “swagger” of players, coaches & fans, wet their pants when the BIG10 comes w/ it’s HAMMER,squashing herby like a annoying gnat.

  • riverhawk62

My mistake huskerguy—-THE BIG10 will NOT ask huskerville to join. They bring absolutley NOTHING to the table.Zero,nadda,nuthin.Sorry,your soon to be left out in the cold,……………bitching & wining like your so acustomed too.

To Lukhawk-You are bringing up a subject, Iowa wrestling, that riverhawk62 and I have addressed several days ago. Had you taken the time to read my earlier comments you would have noticed that I am a die hard Iowa wrestling fan and that I have been to Carver Hawkeye Arena several times to watch Iowa wrestlers kick the shit out of their opponents. I live 30 miles outside of Iowa City. Iowa wrestling is the only Hawkeye sport that I cheer for. If Iowa and Nebraska were to wrestle each other, I’d sit on the Iowa side and hope to see Iowa dominate! Next time you care to weigh in on someone else’s argument, do your homework first before commenting.

  • HUSKERMAN

By the way, Lukhawk, the 70 points Texas Tech put up on Nebraska happened under the previous head coach, Bill Callahan, and according to riverhawk62, that is ancient history. Only the here and now is allowed to be debated. He won’t allow anything from Nebraska’s past to be debated because he only wants to debate Iowa’s recent success in football. Because Iowa has no past glory days in football to brag about he only will allow the success of late to be brought up. In other words, he’s willing to play Poker but only if the deck is stacked in HIS favor. I can’t bring up Nebraska’s amazing run of over 30 years of football dominance or the two times Nebraska kicked Iowa’s asses during Ferentz’s first two years. Oh no! Those glory days are off limits. Only the recent days. I can’t bring up how Hayden Fry won year in and year out but NEVER even played for a national championship. Or how Iowa was the laughing stock of the Big Ten for decades! Nope, off limits. Only the recent success that allows riverhawk62 to look good in this forum. So, you can’t talk about the 70 points Nebraska allowed or how Callahan ran the Husker program into the ground. And don’t you dare bring up Tom Osborne and how he went 255-47 in 25 years. Hell no! That’s off limits!! Nope, only the good times for Iowa and not anything that might actually prove that the Husker program kicked ass for three decades!! Sorry, you’ll have to message riverhawk62 and ask him why he has to have the deck stacked in his favor so that only he can win this debate!!

  • HUSKERMAN

To Lukhawk-It’s kinda’ funny how you think the Big 12 North is worthless but yet just a couple of years ago the North had an undefeated Missouri and an undefeated Kansas ranked in the top 10 heading into the last month of the season. Both teams came close to running the table and possibly being undefeated when the two met to play each other, with the winner possibly making it all the way to the National Championship Game. And where was Iowa ranked at the time? They were floundering near the bottom of the rankings. Just a question, when was the last time a Big Ten team played for the National Championship? Thought so. The Big 12 North was down last year. I’ll admit that. But like I told riverhawk62, it’s not Nebraska’s fault the rest of the North is weak. Nebraska is forced to play those teams. They have no choice. Just like Iowa is forced to play Indiana and Minnesota and Northwestern and Michigan. If it weren’t for Penn State and Ohio State, Iowa’s conference schedule would have been about as bad as Nebraska’s. You play the teams that the conference forces you to play and you set up some easy pre conference games and you hope to come out unscathed and put yourself in a position to be there in the end. And another point. I told riverhawk62 this-look at how many teams in the Big 12 North have had a coaching change in the last 3 years. Every team except Missouri. Any time a new coach comes in there will be big changes in offensive and defensive philosophies and new recruits brought in. That’s why the Big 12 North is down. Imagine if the Big Ten had an 80% change in head coaches. I’d be making fun of the Big Ten being weak. It’s all part of the game.

  • HUSKERMAN

to riverhawk62-Isn’t it odd that you say the Big Ten will never ask Nebraska to join it yet the Big Ten is copying the success of the Big 12 by wanting another team so they can go to two divisions JUST LIKE THE BIG 12 and so they can play a conference championship game JUST LIKE THE BIG 12! I guess the Big Ten must have figured it’s time to come out of the stone age and have a money making conference championship game. But be very careful. Once you go to a conference championship game you force yourself to play an extra game against a highly ranked team within your conference. My Huskers learned that back in “96 when they had just come off back to back national championships. They were in the very first Big 12 Conference Championship Game against Texas and Major Applewhite. Texas upset Nebraska that day. The next year Nebraska won a share of the National Championship. Had Texas not upset Nebraska the year before, Nebraska could have very well won four titles in a row! See the downside that extra game brings? Look at this past season. That extra game ruined a shot at the title for Florida. It almost ruined a shot at the title for Texas. Iowa benefited by not having to play past Thanksgiving. While they sat at home and did nothing, Pitt and Nebraska lost by playing in December. Because of those two teams losing, Iowa receives a BCS at large bowl bid. If either one of those two teams win, Iowa goes to the Capital One Bowl or whatever consolation prize bowl game Iowa would have qualified for. So be careful what you wish for. Having to play a conference championship game puts you in a spot to have a magical season ruined. Imagine if somehow, someway Stanzi never gets injured and Iowa beats both Northwestern and Ohio State. Then the first Saturday in December Iowa has to travel to Indianapolis to play a pissed off Ohio State again in the conference championship game with the winner going to the national title game. Exciting game? YES! Lots of money to be made? YES! But what if the unthinkable happens and Ohio State wins? There goes an undefeated season and a shot at playing for a national championship right down the shitter. And I think the Big Ten is making a huge mistake, football wise, by courting Texas and Nebraska. The last thing Iowa fans want is to have Texas, a school with a clear recruiting advantage, or Nebraska, a team that is on the rise and is built around defense, join them. If you want a patsy, ask Rutgers. Don’t mess with Texas or Nebraska!!

I’ve made an observation about Ferentz as a coach. If you look at his win, loss record for each year, you’ll notice that Ferentz is only as good as his recruiting classes. His wins and losses depend on his players, not on him as a coach. When Ferentz took over as head coach at Iowa, it took a couple of years for his players to get on the field and start. Once they did, the Hawkeyes went from 1-10 and 3-8 his first two years to 7-5, 11-2, 10-3 and 10-2 the next four years. Once that run of talent graduated, then Iowa’s fortunes changed. They went back to mediocre. They went to 7-5, 6-7 and 6-6 the next three years. Then in came a new recruiting class with better talent. Iowa then goes 9-4 and 11-2. My point is, if Ferentz has a tremendous recruiting class, Iowa does well. If they don’t have a tremendous recruiting class, they don’t do well. Iowa’s fortunes don’t rest on Ferentz’s coaching abilities. They rest on the players. That’s a sign of a head coach who is only as good as his players. That’s not good. At Nebraska, Osborne won at least 9 games every year for 25 straight years. I’m not saying he AVERAGED 9 wins a year. His teams actually went out and WON at least 9 games EVERY year for 25 years. His wins were more about his coaching abilities than his players. That’s a sign of one hell of a coach! And the same can be said for Pelini early on in his coaching career. He won 9 games his first year with a team totally made up of Callahan’s players who were recruited to run the shitty west coast offense. He then won 10 games his second year with mostly Callahan’s players. Pelini’s wins are a result of coaching more than it is a result of talent. So the bottom line is – Iowa should have a great team this coming year due to the returning talent. But they have a ton of pressure on them to run the table. Because most of their talent graduates after this upcoming season is over and I’m not impressed with the incoming recruits. I think Iowa is looking at a huge let down after this upcoming year. This next season is probably Ferentz’s only shot he’ll ever get to play for a national championship. Whereas at Nebraska, Pelini finally will have a team that is at least half of his recruits. There will still be about 40% of Callahan’s players on the field but this will be Pelini’s first team where most of the starters will be guys he brought in. And his first two recruiting classes have been rated outstanding. I think Nebraska’s future looks better than Iowa’s due to the fact that Nebraska’s wins are more a result of coaching than players and at Iowa it’s the other way around. And Nebraska has the blue chip athletes coming into the program where Iowa is bringing in farm boys who played at small rural schools. So enjoy this year because the next few won’t be much fun for Iowa.

LOL!!!,………please, open the front door, there is a big ‘ol world outh tere for the taking:you continue to validate my case:husker moorons don’t have a life!!…….Be that as it may,…………….your “squawking” about “blue” chip recruits is beyond funny.Your shoes are stained w/ red-koolaid.You think ne.is the ONLY school that recruits “good” players???,…………my GOD MAN,!You are not only brain-washed, you can’t even see straight,……..The football talent “pool” is bigger & deeper than it’s ever been.To say,& that is what your saying, that the gbr gets more “athletes” than the rest of the world is pure,100% hog-wash.Ferentz is a better coach(& person, which is the REAL difference maker in my book)than little-bo-peep & will prove it as long as he is @ Iowa.I cn only hope he gets the chance to teach a lesson to this pop-warnerhusker-of-a-coach.BTW:please,do NOT stop the in-breeding that your state practices soooo well.,…it gives the rest of us a good amount of comedy relief……

  • HUSKERMAN

I think we have covered about every topic from every angle. While I bring up debatable and interesting ideas you continue to debase the argument with your immature name calling and references. Again, a sign of someone who has lost a debate. You still won’t show any proof that Osborne ever cheated and you continue to make claims that are untrue about him and Pelini and the Husker program as well. You resort to comedy and name calling rather than tackle the topics head on. If this were a college debate class you would be getting an F for a letter grade.

I realize that the talent pool for incoming college football players is very deep. My point was that when you compare the last two recruiting classes for Iowa to Nebraska’s, there is no comparison. Nebraska has pulled in 4 and 5 star athletes from big city schools that are big, fast and strong. Pelini has redshirted many of them and the ones he didn’t redshirt saw limited playing time this past season. Case in point – Dontravious Robinson, a big, strong tailback that possesses quickness and elusiveness. Case in point – Cody Green, a tall, strong dual threat quarterback that most of the nation were licking their chops over to recruit but he signed with Nebraska and will more than likely be the starting quarterback, putting Zach Lee on the bench. Case in point – Collins Okafor, the nation’s #1 fullback a year ago who has the speed to play tailback and has amazing hands when catching the football. Pelini redshirted him for future use. He’s waiting to knock the shit out of people this upcoming season. Case in point – Nebraska just signed the #1 running back out of Ohio and one of the nation’s top dual threat quarterbacks out of Florida. These guys all represent the future of Nebraska football. Whereas at Iowa, you have local farm kids being brought in to play. Nathan Miller who didn’t even get 1 star on Scouts.com and James Morris who will be an undersized, slow linebacker. And A.J. Derby who had impressive numbers but who did he play? Cedar Rapids Jefferson? Iowa City West? Davenport North? Just about any kid can put up big numbers against those schools. Will those players make an impact at Iowa? Probably not. They might have a good game or two but I don’t think they will consistently be impressive players.

You totally missed my point about Ferentz being only as good as his players. If you look at Iowa’s win, loss record after Ferentz’s first two years you will notice a spike up in wins when Ferentz brings in a great recruiting class and a drop down in wins when he doesn’t. If Ferentz was a tremendous coach he’d win 9 or 10 games every year, no matter what the talent on his team. That’s why I predict Iowa to have a very successful upcoming season. They have a ton of returning talent, they have all of their tough games at home and they don’t play a conference championship game. It’s a perfect storm type of situation for Iowa. So enjoy it while you can because once the season is over a ton of talent graduates and looking at Iowa’s last two recruiting classes, you won’t be having any more Cinderella seasons. I think once this upcoming season is over the Hawks will be back to 3 or 4 losses a year. If Ferentz doesn’t get it done this year, it won’t ever get done. Nebraska, on the other hand, will only get better because with each passing year, more and more of Callahan’s players graduate and more and more of Pelini’s blue chip recruits will get playing time. The talent pool will take a huge spike up on the starting offense and defense for Nebraska in the next two years. Pelini has set his team up for a tremendous run for some time to come. Just sit back and see how right I am.

Because of your immaturity and childish name calling, debating with you is like arguing with a retard. It’s pointless. I’m not going to persuade you and you’re not going to persuade me. I certainly hope not all Iowa fans are as obnoxious as you. And again, when are you going to get around to proving Osborne was a cheater and a fraud?

  • riverhawk62

Yeah, well,…….you continue to validate my point:1-you treat the average-joe(also known as Tom Osborne)as a saint.2-you refuse to accept how awful your team/program has been the last 10 years.3.you barley acknowledge you play in the weakest division in footbal.3.TODAY:Iowa has a better coach, better players & plays in a much tougher conference.Period.
BTW:it’s amazing how you “know” exactly how the future will play out,……….typical dilusional husker-clod-brain.

this is proof that hawkeyes really are the dumbest fans in college football. they have one good season and think they can talk about a team who has potential. saying that were not up there with texas and oklahoma but excuse me if there was not a horse collar tackle call which was complete crap we would have beaten texas. i think you hawkeyes need to get wise and realize that with big bo with us nebraska can and will be a national powerhouse. also when you guys fold this year and go 9 and 3 and the huskers maybe go11 and 1 you will talk again also i don’t think lucky stanzi will be so lucky this year.
