FLASHBACK: New Iowa Football Facility?

FLASHBACK: New Iowa Football Facility?

(In light of Gary Barta’s meeting with the Iowa Board of Regents regarding a new football practice facility, here is a flashback to some things we noticed during a trip to Iowa City back on October 28th, 2009))

While gazing at the banners & trophies hanging inside the atrium of the Iowa football offices today prior to the weekly press conference, I noticed some artists renderings of a possible new football practice facility and office complex.  If these have already ‘been out there’, then I am asleep on the wheel, but its the first I had seen of them.

It would appear that some of the parking that is to the west of the Rec Center would be taken up by this facility, near the train tracks.  I am guessing, and this is only a guess, that the location where the bubble currently resides could be turned into additional parking.

So…would they then move the Outdoor facilities to where the bubble is currently?

This looks awesome. HawkeyeNation.com is first to break fresh Hawkeye news once again!

Since they would be taking away parking from the Hospital I imagine the bubble would become a hospital parking lot.

Those photos look pretty sweet. Hope they get it done.

Lee if you look behind the new proposed building you can see the fields that the team already has still there. It looks like to me a chunk of RV parking would go away. Well not go away, but I bet John is right, the parking will be shifted around.

Oregon has an indoor facility like this. They open it up during home games and have tvs showing other games and food vendors and stuff. Since the practice facility is so close to the stadium you can actually go back and forth between the stadium and facility. People go there during halftime. It’s pretty great. If it gets built, Iowa should consider opening it up to fans to watch away games or tailgate or even for fans that can’t get tickets for sold-out games. 5 bucks to get or something.

    Did you draw these?

It looks to me that all of the parking on the west side of the Rec Center will go away. The question then is where are they going to park all those RVs from the big contributors? Consider that they keep the practice bubble to allow other scholarship sports continued use of the bubble, while the new indoor facility that is the artists reduring is used exclusively for the football team. This all seems to ignore the parking/tailgating that makes the environment on game day so great, and no I do not drive an RV to the game.

This concept is modeled after Tennessee. One side of the practice facility will be glass that the new coach’s offices and training facilities will look down on the indoor field. No matter what, the bubble has to come down, it’s life is over.

They would do away with the old grant field I imagine since it is a huge waste of space.

Any confirmation yet on this new indoor practice facility?

  • lumuhawk

I believe the hospital wants the space where the bubble currently resides. This will end up meaning less parking overall, but a sweet new facility.

Anybody know what the status is for this new facility or time frame for construction?

I would assume that funding has started and as soon as they get enough funding to start, they would. I am sure that it is a lot easier to raise funds for the football team right now than it is for the basketball team.

Fundraising has started. Read the link at the top of this that caused me to reposting this older item

Just build a parking garage west of Kinnick. Awesome plan though, its’ about time Iowa gets up to par with ISU’s Practice Facilities :P

Just giving you a hard time, congrats on the future upgrades.
