Rodney Coe a No Go? 2/14 Update

Rodney Coe a No Go? 2/14 Update

Rodney Coe was back on twitter Tuesday with some follow up comments after yesterday’s twitter storm. You can read part of what took place on Monday underneath the line below.

Here is what Coe posted today:

and

As I wrote Monday (which you can read below) it seems like Coe is coming to grips with the liklihood he will be a defensive lineman when he gets back to the FBS level. We’ll keep you posted.

2/13: Rodney Coe took to Twitter Monday.

Coe is a one time Iowa commit who did not make it in because of grades. He spent last year at Iowa Western Juco and has to be there one more year.

I never felt Coe would play running back for Iowa and felt he was headed for the defensive line. Well, it would appear Iowa has let Coe know that they are also looking at him as a lineman this next time around.

Here are series of tweets from Rodney Coe’s twitter account from February 13th:

Coe also went on to say on his twitter feed “Supposedly the they dropped me anyway.” Of course, we are assuming that the is speaking of the Iowa coaches with these tweets, but based upon reading his entire twitter timeline, it seems clear he is talking about Iowa. Plus, focus on his hashtags.

What you never had, you cannot lose, or so the old saying goes. The reality is the majority of players a school signs, if they go the Juco route, they don’t wind up at the school they signed with for one reason or another. Iowa has had a lot of success in this area through the years, but it looks like Rodney Coe is looking for a different and warmer destination.

PM UPDATE: Here is another Coe tweet related to a position conversation from Iowa:

Iowa did tell Coe during his recruitment they would give him a shot at running back. But that was roughly 35 pounds ago. Coe was around 235-240 when he committed to Iowa. Reports from this past fall had him pushing 270 at Iowa Western. I always suspected his frame would have a hard time keeping the weight off and that defensive line would be in his future. It would appear Iowa let him know their intentions were he to come back to Iowa City.

I understand Coe wanting to have a shot at running back. But will probably be able to enroll in a school next January. He will have three years to play two. Most schools will not want to waste time dancing around the running back question, because there are different strength and conditioning avenues for running backs and defensive linemen. Most schools aren’t bringing Juco running backs OR defensive linemen in to redshirt, either.

Good riddance Rodney, have a nice life!

Adios, just another statistic… to add to the running backs who couldn’t hack it. Is that 7 in 2 yrs?

Rodney Coe is another example of what kind of people we have developed in this day and age. AJ Derby is another prime example of what we can expect from people in this new generation. The entitlement within this generation has be come so overwhelming that it worries me what to expect of these people not just on the field, but off the field as well. AJ Derby could have easily developed into an outstanding linebacker if he was willing to put the time in. It was just easier for Derby as well as Coe now to just leave because they didn’t get their way. How many players before them never got their way and stuck it out or changed positions and put the time and effort and reaped those benefits. This is a true reflection on how we raise kids in this day and age. If you don’t get your way run away and find something else. I’m glad kids like Derby, McCall, and Coe are not playing for Iowa. They are a disgrace to the game, the Univ of Iowa, and to humanity.

angryhawk, the only disgrace I see around here is you. This is a pathetic post, so much that I think it has to be a put on. This isn’t indentured servitude here. People are free to make their own choices, and they handle what comes from those choices. AJ Derby’s sin is he wants to be a quarterback with the one and only shot in his life he will ever have to control such a thing. Rodney Coe wants to be a running back. Good grief we are talking about a game here.

Right on Jon the player list is endless who have converted. Mcnutt Quarterback, Dallas Clark Running Back or line Backer cant remember, Bruce Nelson came in as a tight end. The list goes on and on and all were hard workers and successful.

  • Hawkeye2188

I think it would be cool to have Coe bruising in the backfield. Brandon Jacobs seems to be doing okay.

  • Jpagefan

Wow…some strange posts on this article.  If the guy wants to try RB, that’s his right.  At his size, I don’t think it’s the best decision, but the important thing here is that IT’S HIS DECISION.  Iowa moves on…Coe moves on…that’s life.

  • Dwilkins

you gotta admit though that for being “a true hawk,” Derby sure didn’t act like it.

  • Anonymous

Hayden said he’d always be a Hawk but he doesn’t live in Iowa. That’s silly, just as it would be silly for AJ to give up a lifelong dream he still believes in just because he likes the Hawkeyes.

Even if Coe had decided he wasn’t going back to Iowa, I would guess those twitter posts burned a bridge. I would really like to know exactly what was exchanged for him to say, “Now I tell the coaches I don’t wanna play here they wanna doubt me ahaha #whatasurprise #NOT.” I wonder what exactly the coaches said. Either way I am glad the Iowa coaches didn’t coddle him after comments like that. Coe has every right to transfer and attempt to be a running back, I just wonder if he pressed the “Tweet” button a little too quick.

  • Anderhawk

    Angryhawk,
Please don’t allow the other Posters to get you down!  I completely agree with your post, and I think it is reflective of a new generation of people who have a sense of entitlement.  In addition, and unfortunately, they are showing too much individuality in a team sport like Football!

  • Hawkfan

agreed. HN Staff is wrong on this one.

  • Jpagefan

The company I use to work for invested a lot of time and money on me and eventually I jumped ship and took a different occupation because what I was doing wasn’t how I wanted to spend the rest of my work life.  Whoa….I must be a bad person!…………not!  I chose my career path.  These kids are choosing there’s.  I’d love to have seen AJ play linebacker and Rodney Coe playing Defensive End or Linebacker at Iowa.  But, they chose different paths because…..THEY ARE ENTITLED TOO!  It’s their life and not ours to decide what’s best.  Like Jon said…..it’s a game.  I just hope they get a good education somewhere as the chances of making it in the NFL are always slim.

There are two ways to go here.  A player can either accept the recommendations of the coaching staff as Marvin McNutt did and excel, or do it the players way and accept whatever the consequences.

Coaches are generally more knowledgable and more experienced to make the call, with the players and the teams best interest in mind.  When a player thinks he knows better he’s taking a chance and risking significant rewards just to play a position he likes.

Are the Pros more likely to draft/ pay a higher price for team players as opposed to “me first” players?  I tend to think the Pros place a higher value on team players.  The “me first” players should take notice of this.

Time will tell what Coe will become, let’s let him make his choices and hope he takes the advise of the wise and not the foolish.  Good luck Rodney

  • Steve

He won’t make it as a RB at Iowa anyway.  We have Marcus Coker, Adam Robinson, Jewel Hampton, Jeff Brinson, Brandon Wegher, and Mikail McCall ahead of him on the depth chart.  Oh wait. . .

But seriously – and I’ll start this with the HUGE caveat that the coaches know the details of the situation and I don’t – what is the harm in bringing in Coe and letting him try out at RB, especially with our attrition at that spot?  The worst thing that could happen with bringing him in is that he gets to practice, sees Greg Garmon and Barkley Hill running circles around him, and shuffles over to the defensive huddle.  The worst thing with letting him go is seeing him pound the rock against us in a Huskers jersey the day after Thanksgiving.

If he’s at 270, I’d have to know if that is good weight and he’s kept his mobility or if he’s simply ate himself out of position.  With all the advanced weight training and nutrition, freakish athletes are becoming more common.  Brandon Jacobs with the Giants has been brought up, Duante Culpepper was almost DE-sized and he was a great college QB, and LSU just recruited a QB who is pushing 3 bills.

Pulling Coe’s offer because Iowa doesn’t want him at RB is especially surprising as we just signed the 235 lb. Nate Meier stating that he’d start as a RB before looking at other positions.  And that was an 8-man player who was ticketed for a walk-on slot until the last minute.

  • KeepItReal

    Much ado about nothing.

Clearly Coe was frustrated after a candid conversation with the coaches, and maybe overreacted a little. So what? Based on his followup comments, he’s handling the whole thing with more maturity than some fans.

I think Rodney would look great in black and gold, but wish him all the best in whatever path he pursues.

  • hawk4ever

Who cares!! Coe is just another loud mouth in the sports world. We have already had plenty of players like this in the past. Let get some kids that just play and shut the Fuc# up!!!

    Go Hawks…

  • Anonymous

If Rodney Coe wants to take his shot at being a RB, more power to him. He gets to live with the consequences of his decisions. On the other, another freshman RB was the top RB at Iowa Western this year. Rodney had a decent year (9 rush TDs, 6 yds/carry and 470 yds), but he didn’t tear it up. Only 4 pass receptions. Plus, these stats come from playing for a pretty dominant team.  Not the profile of a BCS conference school Running Back to be. He’d better wake up and listen to proven player development experts like the Hawkeye coaching staff if he wants to play on Sundays.  Switching positions at Iowa Western before spring would be a good first step.

Cannot believe people are still bad talking this kid on twitter. Get a life people!

  • Guest

Wow.  Maybe the moral of this story is, ‘never disagree with the HN Staff,’ unless you want to get publicly castrated.  It wasn’t THAT bad of a post.

  • Tc_mp14

Aj derby is an idiot.. atleast his brother stuck it out at iowa and his brother was a walk on.. Well there is a reason that you recruit every year.. and if you think these kids are great.. They will be replaced with ease.. Aj Derby is a disgrace to Iowa and Iowa Football!

  • hawk4ever

Who cares we have so many RB’s now there will be more leaving soon…

Take a hike Coe we don’t need anymore of your kind here. Go play for Western IL

  • Ron

HN Staff is a disgrace and pathetic…. You call angryhawk out with these words and then you make a point that people are free to make their own choices … you mean just like the poster angryhawk made the choice to take a stand and present his opionion. Double standard IMO. Thanks for listening.
