THE DRIVE; HAWKS TO 8-0

THE DRIVE; HAWKS TO 8-0

Does it get any better than this?

Seriously, does it get any better than this?

The Hawkeyes were 97 seconds from history, and more than a few of the Iowa faithful were probably not optimistic after Michigan State scored the first touchdown of the game with 1:37 to go. Speaking for myself, I hadn’t given up because anything is possible. Drew Tate and Warren Holloway showed us that on January 1st of 2005.

Yet, I was not exactly upbeat, either.

Rick Stanzi orchestrated something that will forever be known as ‘The Drive’ in Iowa City. 30 years from now, for those that watched the game, if you mention, ‘Do you remember The Drive?’, everyone will know exactly what you are talking about

This game wasn’t pretty; it looked a lot like the sluggish football played in the Southeastern Conference, didn’t it?

Before Michigan State’s touchdown, it was 58:23 of smashmouth defense and five field goals. Even Iowa’s three field goals were ugly.

So if you were not exactly confident that Iowa could march 70 yards over the last 1:30ish of the game, you are forgiven. However, 10 plays later, the Iowa team was celebrating in the endzone after pulling off one of the most amazing winning finishes in Iowa football history.

The 2009 Iowa Hawkeyes become the first team in school history to start a year 8-0. They have a 12 game winning streak, the second longest in school history. In their last six games away from Kinnick Stadium, they have outscored their opponents 177-46. They have won at Iowa State, Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan State this year, with one road game remaining. They are the first team to beat PSU, Wisconsin and MSU on the road in the same season since Michigan in 1997. By the way, that Michigan team wasn’t necessarily the prettiest, but it was pretty enough to win a National Championship.

Now, Iowa is down to a four-game season for more history. The Hawks will host Indiana and Northwestern before going to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes. They have just two wins in that stadium since the late 1950′s. BUT WHO CARES, right? This is the 2009 Iowa football team we are talking about.

They ain’t pretty, but their ours. They ain’t the best offense, but they are good enough when they have to be and they haven’t lost yet.

Neither team committed a turnover in this game, and I thought my statement of ‘If Iowa doesn’t turn the ball over, they will win every game on their schedule’ was in some jeopardy. Nah, no worries, mate. Just your standard 70-yard game winning drive in 1:30, and the fourth down play from the seven yard line with just :02 to play.

What the heck, right?

Some will say, after the euphoria wears off, that this team shouldn’t have been in this situation. The running calls on 2nd and goal from the 13 were interesting, to say the least.

But for now, I don’t want to deal with that. I don’t want to pick nits on this night…on this historic night. No way…we can do that all week long if we have to.

This was epic, to the definition of the word.

This was one we will never forget.

Bigger than Tate to Holloway? I think so, because let’s be honest, as amazing as that was, and it was amazing, it was flukish. This was not a fluke. This was a 10-play drive; no flukes involved. Cue the freaking Rocky music, will ya?

Speaking of Rocky, how about this comment from our Monday Morning Quarterback, Jared Clauss, from last Sunday night:

“We are the Rocky Balboa of college football right now. We look shaky early, but we are to fight. We take a lot of hits but don’t go down, we fight on and we always come out on top.”

I can’t top that, and won’t even try. Enjoy the night. Enjoy the week. Enjoy this freaking season, Iowa fans. Your Iowa Hawkeyes are 8-0.

One correction: this is the third longest win streak in Iowa history, behind the big one in the 20′s and a 14-game win streak from 1900 to 1901. But clearly this is the biggest streak in modern history, and choc-full of amazing games like this one. I honestly didn’t think we had a chance of scoring with :02 left but Stanzi was unbelievably cool and made the big play. It wasn’t pretty, nor does it look good to voters, but this season isn’t about voters or margins or impressing anyone, it’s about taking care of business and doing what it takes to win. Great game Hawks!

I love it. We get to drive the so-called “experts” at ESPN crazy for another week who hate us because we don’t have the “stars” and sexy offenses of their favorites Florida and USC. Get used to it. This impossible dream is still alive!!

For a second there, I thought that was Brad Banks, and I was wondering who the hell Iowa was playing in that game. Then I realized that it’s McNutt againt Arizona.

What a mature, professional, totally businesslike showing tonight! The CR Gazette posted an interesting article this week, giving some real insight into what a Hawkeye halftime locker room is like. I kept thinking about that in the last minute of tonight’s game. This coaching staff is second to none! Not only do they know what to do when crunch time comes, they also know how to recruit good kids and how to keep the players’ emotions in check in tough situations. Awesome comeback tonight!

  • caball

what a good win, but we are beaten up pretty good. These kids have heart and you can not measure heart. 2 great wins for the state today. Great job hawks and cyclones.

  • HawkeyeShane

Well said Jon! Let the armchair quarterbacks pick this performance apart later…but for tonight!?!? WE CELEBRATE! GO HAWKS!

  • rosebud24

I had to question some of the play calling tonight but in the end they got the job done. Thanks for a few more gray hairs. Keep talkin haters. We love it.

I listened to the game overseas and since I cannot afford pay radio at the moment, I listened to the MSU commentators. They made the penalties at the end seem like the Big 10 will investigate them (the PI call with Moeaki and the hit on Stross). Since I could not watch them, were they really terrible calls like the MSU announcers stated? I mean they were talking scandal during the whole post game. Missing Gary and Ed in Moscow…

  • Mike

The calls were legitimate, correctly made calls. The commentators on the Big Ten Network had no problem with them. A Michigan State fan could maybe make the argument that they could have been no-calls, but no way could they say that they were bad calls.

After watching the Cyclones persevere and show true Iowa grit with a season making win in Nebraska, I was willing to live with an Iowa loss, surely, both teams couldn’t make history on the same day, well, they did! Christmas came early. Can’t wait to hear the naysayers, I just hope we can continue to make them look silly for doubting our Hawkeyes!

  • Florida Hawkeye

I’ll be surprised if the Hawks don’t move up at least one spot in the next BCS poll, as they were underdogs at State. It wasn’t pretty for three quarters and 13 1/2 minutes but Stanzi came through when the team needed him. If this offense evers puts a complete game together….watch out! I as well can’t wait to hear the pundits try and figure this win out…Hawk fans, get ready to take out your warm clothes as your heading somewhere warm for the holidays. The networks won’t get goosebumps but the bowl reps know Iowa travels unlike any other school from the Big Ten….and recently, THEY WIN THOSE GAMES!

  • Chewie

As an Ohio native and Browns fan, the phrase ‘The Drive’ has made me sick for twenty years. It will be a pleasure to replace that with this one.
Stanzi to McNutt has a certain ring to it, don’t you think?

  • Tim

On the WHO radio pregame yesterday, a question was posed: Would you take a guaranteed 12-1 season with a Rose Bowl win, or gamble on running the table and a National Championship. Everyone, including “Z” picked the guaranteed 12-1 Rose Bowl Win Season. I disagree. Even though I don’t think our offense is good enough to win a National Championship, I think our defense gives us a chance. Besides, I don’t think the Rose Bowl has the luster and importance that it once did before the BCS. Is it really “The Grandaddy of Them All” any more? There is something magical about this team, and I don’t think they have it in them to settle for less. Why should we? We don’t have the best athletes in the nation, but we have the best coached young men in the world, and I’ll take that any day. In Kirk I Trust.

  • jimmy henning

    Did the Hawks win?

  • cody

someone said we should just take a loss at the horseshoe to spare embarrassment should we go undefeated and make it to the national title game. does this make anyone else sick to their stomach? what does it say about your character if you’re willing to take a loss to spare possible embarrassment?

  • ERichardD

It doesn’t get any better than this win. What a great, great day in Iowa FB history!
