Thoughts on the hawks...

I love the effort the guys play with. However, it is obvious we are still down talent wise. Creighton made us look like we were playing Duke. Our offense was pushed out so far from the hoop we looked lost. I realize Creighton has a nice group...but a team that wants to be in the top half of the B10 has to do better then the butt whoopin we took today. Melsahn looks lost on the floor...I would take 3 Creighton guys before the effort he is giving us this year...maybe sophomore blues?

Love Fran's passion and more athleticism is on the way, but to think we are an upper tier B10 team is still a pipe dream. (In my opinion.)

The problem today wasn't talent. Creighton's talent isn't any better than Iowa's talent.

The problem today was effort, energy, and focus. Creighton had them all. Iowa didn't bring any of them.

I am not sure that Lil Greg wouldn't be the best player on our team. That being said our effort for the most part sucked.

Creighton's talent is better than Iowa's. Just because they play in the Valley doesn't mean they are less talented.

I don't agree with this statement at all. McDermott was the best player on the court and we had no one to match up with their big inside.

The effort and and energy were there we were just taken out of our comfort zone by a team that played tough defense and didn't allow second chances. And they exploited our lack of size on defense and shot lights out. They are a much better team than us at this point.

Not sure how you could come away from the game thinking our talent is equal to theirs. They have more quickness, better ball handlers and played with more intensity from start to finish. We have team of shooters that can't shoot (again). Not getting a juco PG in this year was a critical mistake.

Some people equate talent with athleticism. Basketball talent is completely different.

Agree with all, esp. the PG situation. Wonder if we'll ever hear the whole story with Hubbard.

Re: Thoughts on the hawks...

Creighton has 2 really good players in McDermott and Young. Otherwise we had the better talent. For whatever reason "we" didn't show up yesterday...at all. Mel's best minutes were spent on the bench and we couldn't hit a free throw. I think if we hit those free throws and keep it a 6 point game it keeps the crowd and players into it. The game started slipping and we just folded. Thankfully it's early and we still have a favorable non-conference schedule to get the lineup figured out.

Creighton's talent isn't better than Iowa's when you factor in 1 through 13. The difference in this game was these numbers:

Creighton made 32 of 58 shots
Iowa made 21 of 58 shots

Creighton was hitting everything and Iowa couldn't make a layup. It wasn't the Creighton D either, Iowa had good looks they just couldn't get anything to fall. Creighton made 2 more three's and 9 more two's, that is a 24 point difference and Iowa lost by 23.

Creighton revealed that we will, once again, be a poor perimeter-shooting team. It will be tough to win without either an inside presence or an outside presence.

That said, we are still better than we were last year. Let's try to be patient and let the team improve year-over-year until they are respectable.

Re: Thoughts on the hawks...

This was not an issue of having better talent. The Hawks just had a very down shooting night, and Creighton hit when they needed to. I mean Gatens missed an open layup O_o. The problem as I saw it is the whole team had a bad shooting night. We might be able to get by with 1 guy in a slump but not the whole team. We also need the individuals who were suppose to improve from last year to get their head out of the sand, and step it up!

One other thing I am not too upset about the loss, because heading into it I thought it could be one they steal. I didn't think they would get blown out, but sometimes you'll have that. This season is just getting started, and I still see an above .500 team.

Re: Thoughts on the hawks...

Creighton may have a couple of kids that are as good as the Hawks but overall Iowa has better talent, talent doesn't win games when talent shows up flat and unispired, the hawks got outhustled for loose balls and rebounds, Creighton showed up ready to beat a Big Ten team, our guys thought they were play N. Ill. we dont have the talent to just show up and go thru the motions, hopefully after watching this debacle on film they will learn that!! One of the ugliest games I can remember, should be an interesting week of practice

Gatens missed layup indicates he still cant shoot with his left hand. Always been his weakness.

Creighton played well. They made their open 3's while Iowa did not. McDermott was best player on floor by far. No one else even close.

Re: Thoughts on the hawks...

Really? We have more talent? No freaking way. They have two HUGE advantages in McDermott and Echenique vs Basabe and Archie. Then a sizable advantage in Gibbs vs May. Young vs Cartwright is probably a push. Gatens might be a slight win vs Manigat. You couple our talent deficiencies with us shooting 36% from the field and 53% from the line then add in a Creighton bench player shooting out of his mind (Dingman) and you get a blow-out loss.
