Really, it comes down to defense
That's why Iowa lost this one.
Can't get stops, you aren't going to win.
Yes, Iowa had a 4 min and a 3 min dry spell but the D was brutal.
Momentum was tough to keep going too.

Re: Really, it comes down to defense
Spank from where I was sitting, which was about 29 rows up, it looked to me like our lack of perimeter D from early on in the season reared its ugly head again. We were not closing out on shooters imo.

Offensive rebounds too (which falls back on defense).
Nebraska was 250th+ in the nation in OREB% and they snagged TWELVE offensive boards. TWELVE. They missed 25 shots tonight and got 1/2 of those back. That's just awful.

We have got to get better at blocking out...so many times we should get the board but nobody puts a body on a guard coming in.

Re: Really, it comes down to defense
Rebounding was horrendous again, it frustrates me that Iowa can't get a rebound at any critical situation.

Re: Really, it comes down to defense
Iowa was missing shots and then not getting stops. That can't happen.
When you are leading, you need to extend the lead, not trade baskets.
That's frustrating.

I agree with that. I think our pick and roll defense lead to a lot of 3's when the rotation was late. Part of it is recognizing how the game is being played and what players strengths are. I think part of the problem is basketball IQ and understanding your opponent, and how to play defense. And of course recognizing who is making plays on the floor. Tonight showed there is still a lot to learn defensively.

Re: Really, it comes down to defense
Rotations were bad, could not stop ball, pretty much everything you need to do on defense Iowa failed at doing.

Re: Really, it comes down to defense
Agreed, the lack of O boards and perimeter D was our downfall tonight. I thought we had the problem corrected, but apparently...not...

Re: Really, it comes down to defense
I would like to add that the Hawks gave up the baseline to a ballhandler a bajillion times tonight.

When you play a team as athletic as Nebby this will happen. Hard to stop an offensive juggernaut like they have in Lincoln. It was hard to watch

Re: Really, it comes down to defense
As bad as our defense was, we still win that game if we could just make our open shots... the ones that almost seem automatic to our opponents.
