DMR/Hanson's article on Dr Tom

I would say the talent level at Iowa has taken a huge tumble since the Raveling/Davis days. I remember those teams being able to matchup with anyone in the country. Now it seems they have a hard time competing with some mid level D-I schools.

Hansen: Iowa made a big mistake in letting Davis walk

wow Settle's quote is interesting. Iowas front court was so good that year, even without Okey. They just might have done more damage had he not been hurt.

I'm just glad Davis is getting the credit he deserves. Don't forget, after leaving Iowa, he went to Drake and built that team into a championship team with his son Keno.

In the days of Lute and Dr. Tom when one game was over you couldn't wait for the next game... I haven't felt that way in years........

I can't wait for the next game.............

Sam was the most talented player on that team and it was not even close.

Too bad he injured himself.

I was blown away to read that Dr. Tom has now been away from Iowa basketball for as long as he coached it. Time continues to fly by.

You can thank Bob Bowlsby for treating Dr. Tom like crap.

I was at the Iowa/Northwestern game in Dr. Tom's final home game and the crowd started a Fire Bowlsby chant.

What a arrogant jerk Bowlsby was.

Bowlsby was just trying to get the program to the next level. Unfortunately he trusted Alford with the job.

Apparently there are a lot of people who forget how frustrated many fan were becoming with Davis....rarely challenging for the Big 10 title, padding Iowa's record with non-conference patsies, sneaking into the tournament with an 8 seed...yes, they would win the first game, and then usually got bounced in the second game.

He was treated terribly...on that I agree...but to think many fans didn't want a change is revisionist history.

I didn't have a problem with the initial hiring of Alford. After the Stoops thing many people (boosters specifically) wanted the next hot name. Alford was that and I think the boosters pressed Bowlsby to hire him.

I did have a problem with the contract extensions he was given. Bowlsby tied his hands with those and made it hard to fire him.

Not a fan of Bowlsby but the hire of Alford looked good at first. I know I was excited to have him.

It was time for Davis to move on, but the way Bowslby sent him out was what irked me.

Fry was sort of encouraged to retire and it was handled much better than how Davis was "asked" to leave.

You can thank Mary Sue Coleman and her administration for the lame duck year and all the bad PR that went with it. That was not Bowlsby's doing. The majority of people wanted a coaching change and were ecstatic over the Alford choice. A lot of revisionist history in this thread.

I remember listening to the pre-game and post-game show on the radio for Davis' last game and 75% of callers called in to say they were excited for a coaching change to take us to "the next level". The stupid next level phrase was used about a billion times. Pretty comical looking back on it
