With proper coaching I think Cully Payne will wind up his time at Iowa as one helluva player. I'm just not sure he's going to get that with this coach and staff.

Re: Cully Payne vid from Rob Howe

Cully needs help. Although Hooper doesn't agree with me, Cully just can't break people down enough off the dribble to be an effective point guard. Sure he can beat his guy now and again off of ball reversals because they chest him 30 feet away from the basket. But he can't break them down consistently. Not a knock on him at all. Just not his game.

Now, make him the secondary ball handler and I think you would notice a big difference in Cully's productivity.

I have been around basketball for a long time and it is hard for me to look at Cully's play and think he will be better than average. I may be wrong and I hope I am because I want the Hawks to be successful, but I don't see what some of you do, and in no way do I think Cully will be as good of a point guard as Horner or Oliver. They both could do things I don't think Cully could do. You could watch Horner and Oliver as freshman at Iowa and every once in awhile say "wow" that was a great play. I haven't seen any of that from Cully.

The up and under that Cully did - I went "wow".
His take against POTY candidate Evan Turner made me go "wow".

There are quite a few wow moments Cully has had, as well..l. some were - "wow I can't believe he did another jump pass" or "wow, he walked again" but there have a been a good share of "wow" moments that were good for CUlly, as well.

His stats so far this year are on par with Dean and Jeff, some are better.

Where was that interview conducted? Looks like a restaurant kitchen or something.

I like Cully. He's gonna be a good one, I think.

And he's definitely tougher than I am.

Personally I think he is going to be a hell of a good PG before all is said and done. Glad to have him.

Payne is going to do whatever it takes to improve not only his own play but those around him which is one of the unseen characteristics you often need in a PG. It's still too early for me to call him the next anyone but I am glad he is a Hawkeye and I look forward to seeing just how good this staff can make someone over the course of 4 full years.
