Joe is making this surreal

His disconnect is astonishing. He is making this a macabre spectacle. His statement does not really address the issue as to why he was fired. He said while turning to go back to his house, after laughing and relishing the love from the students, to pray for those kids....it was an afterthought to him! His sons, asst coaches. Somebody needs to stop him, as this is just making a bizarre event worse. He still does not get it.

It seems that he is in denial of the situation a bit. Or that he thinks still that somehow he might coach again. He used words like "I'm not your coach right now". And "it looks like maybe I'm out of it for now". Something along those lines. I don't think he realizes that this is truly THE END for him. It's just a crazy situation. I never thought I would see the headline Joe Paterno Fired.

This is a huge development. Probably the biggest sad downfall ever in college sports. Joe Paterno maybe a modern day martyr status in some senses. Sandusky definately the monster. And the kids....the victims in this story. There are clearly no winners in this story tonight. I'm an Iowa fan to the core, but this is a very big deal. So sad.....I never could every picture Paterno being fired from Penn St. This is a legend that has fallen......

Re: Joe is making this surreal

When I saw the impromptu interviews outside of his house last night, I was half convinced he has early stages of dementia. He was so inappopriate with his smiles and PSU cheers. He seemed to know what was going on tonight though and he was equally inappropriate.

You know, I don't even know what to think about all of this. Just heard one explanation on ESPN coming from Paterno's camp that their may be information coming out that his understanding of the alleged incidents may have amounted to as little as "horseplay," and that he testified as such. This understanding playing a part in why he was not indicted by the Grand Jury. I don't know what "horseplay" means in the legal sense, but I can imagine that it doesn't mean sodomizing a little kid. At the end of the day, this guy comes from a different time, and he is 80 something years old...he is not going to know how to act when it comes to this type of thing.

The entire coverage of this is surreal. I really feel like I'm watching a documentary for the 30 for 30 series.

+1 I'm sort of waiting for more information to decide what I think on everything. People need to remember that partial information can be as bad as, or worse in some situations, than having no information. The only real facts that anybody has so far is from a 23 page document.

The guy has been completely out of it for years now. What exactly do you expect from the old geezer? Leave him be now. He probably still thinks Nixon is the president.

Wow, you mean Joe appreciates the students' support? That's a hangin' offense if there ever was one.
