The Hawkeyes are #15 in the initial 2010 BCS standings. Is that good news or bad news? Both. The lowest any school that played for the title has been in the initial BCS standings was #12 (LSU). However, Iowa is only nine hundredths of a point out of #10, so it's worth taking a look at least.

Note: everything below is predicated on the Hawkeyes winning-out, finishing 11-1 (8-0)

Who's ahead of us?
Big Ten: Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin
Big XII: Oklahoma, Missouri, Oklahoma State
SEC: Auburn, Louisiana State, Alabama
Pac-10: Oregon, Stanford
MWC: Texas Christian, Utah
WAC: Boise State

  • The Hawkeyes play Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Ohio State. So, we will pass them if we beat them. That's three spots ... #12
  • Oklahoma plays @ Missouri and @ Oklahoma State; Missouri plays Oklahoma and @ Nebraska; Oklahoma State plays Nebraska, @ Texas, and Oklahoma. So at most, just one 13-0 team. That's at least two spots ... #10
  • Auburn plays LSU and @ Alabama; LSU plays @ Auburn, Alabama, and @ Arkansas; Alabama plays @ LSU and Auburn. One of these teams will stay in front of the Hawkeyes. Two more spots ... #8
  • Oregon & Stanford have already played and could both theoretically win-out. Arizona is ranked below the Hawkeyes, but if they are 11-1, there will be strong sentiment for them to jump over us. Oregon plays @ USC and Arizona; Stanford plays Arizona; Arizona plays @ Stanford, USC, and @ Oregon. So, at most two teams stay in front of Iowa. #8
  • Utah hosts TCU on 11/6. The winner will likely go 12-0. (Utah also plays @ Notre Dame on national TV on 11/13) At least one more spot for us ... #7
  • Boise State's best chance to lose is @Nevada on 11/26, but they likely go 12-0 #7
If the Hawkeyes go 11-1, the worst case is that we are ranked #7 and we play in the Rose Bowl.

However, I don't think Boise/Utah/TCU, even at 12-0 can hold off an 11-1 (8-0) Big Ten Champ. Two more spots for us ... #5

Who's left?

  • 13-0 Big XII champ (maybe 12-1 Oklahoma or Nebraska)
  • SEC champ (13-0 or 12-1)
  • 12-0 Oregon
  • 11-1 Stanford or Arizona
Iowa has to get past three of those four to get to the BCS title game.
