Hawkeye Football 2010 Outlook
There have been lots of preseason stories about the Hawkeyes, predictions and plenty of other information. Is anyone else just ready for the boys to play a game?
To say that the 2009-10 season was full of peaks and valleys is a bit of an understatement. We survived more games then we out right won. The Hawks had to block 2 field goal attempts by Northern Iowa within seconds of each other to hold on and win. We lost our leader and still almost beat Northwestern. We had a completely unknown QB play the game of his your career at the Horseshoe and almost win! We ended the season with an exclamation point with a win over a "great" ACC team.
Some thoughts leading into the 2010-11 season of Hawkeye football. When Iowa took the field last September, we were all concerned because we did not have a running back and now we almost have too many. For that reason I am not worried about Brandon Wegher. In addition to the “issue” at running back, we have some question marks on the offensive line. Honestly there are several reasons I feel like this issue is over blown. I understand that we lost some quality guys, but Head Coach Kirk Ferentz is an o-line coach at heart and I have supreme confidence in his and the coaches abilities in forming this young line. It is time for some guys to step up a bit. One name that comes to mind, Julian Vandervelde in my opinion he needs to be a leader with his type of play (eliminate mental mistakes) and with his words. When you have a younger group you need a veteran to set the tone and I think he is ready to make this step. Another rebuilding group would be linebacker; again there is no reason to lose sleep over this. When we needed the backups to step up last season they did so there no reason to think that will not be the case this season. With a very solid secondary and defensive line I see another strong Iowa defense taking the field this season. With all the attention Clayborn has been receiving, the rest of the d-lineman should have stellar seasons. I think Clayborn will still have a quality season but I think that the other players will look good because of the constant attention he receives. Ricky Stanzi should have another good season; hopefully he throws fewer interceptions the last season. Honestly Stanzi could very well be a dark horse for a lot of post season awards. Finally we have the receivers; the Hawkeye receiver core will be a nice addition to the solid running backs. Overall we have a solid team, a few standout athletes but overall very solid.
The Hawkeyes will have another solid season; we have an excellent chance to win every game. I am sure that Ricky will make sure we are on the edge of our seats. To challenge for the National Title may be on the horizon for the Hawkeyes.
