I finally have had the chance to review the tape on the final drive vs. Michigan State. One thing really strikes me...Iowa's two minute offense was amazingly simplistic. Execution was the name of the game, and execute the Hawks did.

After being in for the first couple plays, Wegher came out of the game in favor of Morse, most likely to assist with the pass blocking. Morse played the rest of the drive. Also interesting that while we've used the 5 wide sets several times this year, we didn't break it out even one time on this drive.

Play 1: Trips Left, Wegher right – Drive route with Stross (Slot) coming under Moeaki (on LOS X2 from Bulaga) with dual in routes at different depths; McNutt (wide left) catches the curl/deep in for 15 yds - MSU 3 DEEP/5 UNDER

Play 2: Trips Right, Wegher left (flipped formation) – Unable to determine play, although judging by later plays I'm thinking that this was all verts - Stanzi runs for 2 yards - MSU C2MAN

Play 3: 2X2 (McNutt, Moeaki left, Stross, DJK Right) Wegher right – Chair combo with Moeaki running the out and McNutt on the vert – Stanzi put very little air under the ball and was lucky it wasn’t picked – Incomplete to McNutt - MSU C2MAN

Play 4: Trips left, Morse right (Same form as play 1) – Same combo as play 1 – Stross catches for 22 yards - MSU C3MAN

Play 5: Trips left, Morse right (Same form as play 1) - It looks like it’s 4 verts but McNutt got jammed like a mofo – Incomplete to DJK - MSU C2MAN - Coverage almost looked blown...both safeties converged in the middle on Stross...DJK left by himself

Play 6: 2X2 (DJK/Stross left, Moeaki down/McNutt right) – Follow route with dual ins and different depths on the left side - Complete to DJK for 16 yards - MSU INVERTED C2 (All 3 LB's blitzed)

Play 7: Trips right, Morse left (Same form as Play 2) – Weakside fade to DJK – Holding call on MSU - MSU C2MAN

Play 8: DJK left, Moeaki down right, Stross slot right, McNutt wide right – Stross and McNutt ran the Sail/Chair combo (fade/quick out), DJK ran the short post, Moeaki tried to drag across unhindered – Bad throw, ugly play, incomplete - MSU C0 (MSU blitz)

Play 9: 2X2 (McNutt/Moeaki left, Stross/DJK right) – Mirrored fade/quick out combos – Somebody missed a signal or Stross was supposed to run a hitch…throw was not made as if Stross was supposed to slant on the play – Incomplete - MSU C0 (LB & S on Moeaki) (MSU blitz)........Interesting to note after this play, Stanzi looked at the sideline dejectedly and said something that looked like "I know!!" as if he missed the read...

Play 10: Same form as play 9 – Fade/quick out to the left / Double slants to the right – Incomplete to Stross - MSU C0 (MSU blitz)

Play 11: Same form as play 9, Moeaki motions right and shoots to the right flat/Double slants on the right, slant on the left (McNutt) – TOUCHDOWN IOWA!!! - MSU C0 (MSU blitz)

We really only ran 3 or 4 concepts all the way down the field. We utilized formations to try to get our playmakers in 1 on 1 situations, and when it counted the most, those playmakers made plays. McNutt had a couple good catches on the drive, DJK had to sky for a ball to get us into the red zone, and Stross had some good YAC off his crossing route. Morse did a solid job pass blocking the entire drive...quite the team effort all the way down the field. A couple of the incompletions were ugly, but the deep ball to DJK that was defensed well by MSU (play 5) was thrown PERFECTLY.

And once more, for posterity...

Love the breakdown. The other key to remember here is we went no huddle with the exception of the time out before the last play.

I'd like to see us go no huddle more often, particularly at the end of the 1st half when we've been struggling offensively.
