OBSERVATIONS/REMARKS:

* About young guys contributing in 2010:

- Backups will need to see quality reps in 2010. What is the implication there? Who will likely see the action?

- Addressing the above, we most obviously thinnest depth-wise at safety and we're simply too "top heavy" at LB. Thus, I anticipate that it's a no-brainer that we'll see plenty of young guys seeing early action at safety and LB. Here I'm completely split concerning whom I expect to see early action at safety. We're seemingly thinnest at strong safety, thus, it would make sense for Hitchens to see early action if he distinguishes himself. However, on the flip side, Greenwood will be graduating after the 2010 season. Consequently, we'll be needing to replace a starter at FS in 2011. Does that then mean that the leader out of Miller and Shumpert will get the nod to see early action at FS? Lastly, from what I've heard, the only backup safety we currently have who's done much to distinguish himself is Nielsen ... and he's at FS. Is he good enough to ward off all the advances that Miller/Shumpert might make ... or are we possibly going to see 2 TR FR see early action in 2010?

- At LB, I'm one of "those people" who fully expect that Morris will be one of the TR FR to see early action. The next logical choice then seems to be Poggi. My guess is that Kirksey needs to physically develop a bit more (I absolutely love his upside though)
and that Gray will need to take a redshirt because of his ACL injury. What I'm particularly curious about in this entire line of thought is where DiBona ends up landing in the discussion.

- One area I haven't spoken about, but should, is our situation on the DL. We all know that our starters are pretty incredible ... however, how is our depth? Quite surprisingly, I've found that historically we're rarely all that terribly deep on the DL. Unfortunately, 2010 will not be a whole lot different there. I really like Daniels ... however, he's pretty much the only truly proven guy. Daniel has done enough to garner repeated mention by Norm ... and that's definitely a good thing. However, since spring practice, I've heard a lot more gushing about Alvis than Daniel. That probably is good news for us concerning our future at DE ... however, it means that we probably have a bit more to worry about at DT. I'd ideally like to have a big storyline this fall be about how Bigach is slated to be the next Klug or Ballard. Unfortunately, while I've heard some very positive things about the quickness and physical development of Bigach, I haven't heard a whole lot about his level of play at DT. Might this open the door for Carl Davis to enter the picture early if he can get qualified? Maybe! Also, I really like Donavan Johnson at DE. I really hope that he can get qualified too. This is just a gut feeling here ... however, I wouldn't be shocked at all if the trio of Johnson, Trinca-Pasat, and Davis ended up being nearly an exact analog to Binns, Klug, and Ballard. The question then remains ... who will be our future Clayborn? I don't have an answer there ... however, I don't find it at all surprising that the coaches are recruiting VERY hard at DE. Of course, some of the above lines of thought are also why I'm very concerned about Davis and Johnson getting qualified.

* Notice that the Hawks will have a surprising amount of experience on D in 2011

- 3 SR vets on the DL (Daniels, Daniel, Binns)
- 2 SR vets at LB (Nielsen, B Davis)
- 4 SR vets at DB (Sash, Prater, Bernstine, Lowe)

- Folks will invariably make a big "to-do" about how much elite talent that we're losing on the DL. However, the "next man in" mantra could really end up paying HUGE dividends for the squad in 2011. There SHOULD BE plenty of SR leadership on the 2011 squad and, on top of that, there will also be a lot of young talent that is getting worked into the fold too.

- Unfortunately, the 2011 D will have to shoulder quite a number of losses. Specifically, we're losing 8 guys on D (7 from the front seven), 6 of whom are starters and one of whom will be a first-year starter.

- Potentially the positive "flip side" of looking at potential deficiencies that we'll have on the D is that we'll arguably be a good bit stronger on O. However, I'm one of those guys who's always rather bank on a strong D than a strong O. If there's any good news, it's that the 2011 D should probably land somewhere in between 2005 and 2008 in terms of how good it will be.
