IC..Iowa City or Insanity City?
Expectations are at an all-time high in Iowa City this year for the upcoming football season. Sports Illustrated has pinned Iowa in the Top Ten at #6, which would be Iowa's all time highest ranking to start a season.
The return of Adrian Clayborn could have other teams in the league shaking in their spikes. Clayborn announced shortly after the Orange Bowl victory that he would be returning to Iowa City for his senior campaign, and that is when the buzz started. Clayborn, Karl Klug, Christian Ballard, and Broderick Binns all return to what many are deeming the best defensive line in college football.
"America's Son" Ricky Stanzi, three sophomore running backs, and experience on the OL and the WR corps, as well as what is returning on defense, have the makings of what could be a very, very special season for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Sure Iowa lost a number of quality players in the NFL draft in April, but in turn, they return experience. Bryan Bulaga, Tony Moeaki, and Kyle Calloway all were drafted from the offensive side, but Iowa returns, Riley Reiff, Allen Reisner, and Julian Vandervelde respecively.
On defense, Iowa lost Pat Angerer, A.J. Edds, and Amari Spievey to the draft, and their fill-ins include Jeff Tarpinian, Jeremiha Hunter and Micah Hyde.
Iowa did not lose their safeties Brett Greenwood and ball hawk Tyler Sash, which bodes well for the Hawkeyes. Experience is key in college football and Iowa bring A LOT back.
Are they smelling roses in August in Iowa City? They could be as the expectations have brought some insanity with them as we near kickoff in just under three weeks.
Football is in the air and it's just a matter of time before the swarm invades Kinnick Stadium.
