Quarterbacks
Stanzi looked good. He didn’t make any bad decisions. Went from first to second read real well. Vandenberg still has great zip on his passes and much like Stanzi didn’t make any bad decisions that I remembered. Wienke is close to the other two but the obvious difference is the zip on the passes. The long out pass is not one he can make right now. He threw a pick six to Castillo. I’m not as down on Derby as most. What do you expect when he’s throwing against our number one defense? He needs to work on going from the primary to the secondary receivers when the primary is covered. Derby has a very strong arm and when the play wasn’t there, he threw it away.
Running Backs
Hampton looks FAST. Tough to gauge much on A-Rob and Hampton, they weren’t involved a lot in full contact stuff. But in the non contact stuff, Hampton looks to be back. No limp at all and looks faster than I remember him. Not much to add on A-Rob and Paki’s not worth my time. I will say this, if Wegher is gone, no big deal in my mind as De’Andre Johnson is ready to play NOW. He’s built nicely and has good speed and was tough as nails against our number 1 Defense. Just looking at Coker has me excited too. Nothing to add on our Full Backs, Rogers is a work in progress, I expected more from him.
Wide Receivers
DJK and McNutt both look the part. I’m excited for our potential from them this year. Keenan looks real big and minus one drop, I love how he catches everything with his hands. Not much to add on the other WR’s, Sandeman and Chaney were pretty quiet. Nordmann burnt Prater for a TD early, Prater came up limping. Cotton didn’t impress me much and I was disappointed that Shumpert didn’t practice.
Tight Ends
I like Reisner a lot. Blocked well and caught everything to him. Herman can play too. Better than I expected. I can’t say that Griggs, Getz, or Vier caught my eye. I did watch Gimm a little; don’t think he’ll ever see meaningful time for us. Finally, CJ, obviously who has a future at TE. He’s a big dude. However, he really needs to work on his blocking. I did have to laugh as the staff put him in a lot of situations where he was blocking Clayborn one on one. Not FAIR! That being said, he’ll play this year and make an impact.
Offensive Line
I’ve read in quite a few places where people were happy with the O-Line play. I thought it was very mediocre. It looked good against the pass rush but was below average in the run game. Reiff, Vandervelde, and Zusevics looked solid those three are set. Ferentz had good things to say about Gettis however I thought he struggled most of the scrimmage. He was pushed back into the backfield many times. The center position is a dead heat because they are both mediocre. Personally, I thought Ferentz looked better than Koeppel. As for others that stood out to me, Nolan MacMillan, Orne, and Van Sloten all look like they could play if needed. Donnal is definitely a big guy, can’t wait until he adds a lot of muscle. He looked much better in the run game as opposed to pass rush.
Defensive Ends
Obviously Clayborn and Binns look great. AC couldn’t be blocked most of the day. We won’t be hurt when Daniel needs to play, he’s more than a solid backup and will start next year. As for the other D-Ends, didn’t see a lot right now.
Defensive Tackles
Again, not a lot to say about Ballard and Klug; they’re both ready to go. I found the next Klug/King and it’s Steve Bigach. Awesome motor!! Gettis and Koeppel had trouble keeping him out of the backfield. Carl Davis is one huge D-Lineman. I can’t wait to see him play for us on Saturdays. I’d love to see us redshirt him but I have a feeling he may play this year. Nardo also has a very nice motor. Ferguson didn’t play but he’s also a pretty big guy. Don’t remember seeing much of Mike Daniels, Donavan Johnson, and Mike Hardy.
Linebackers
I like Tarp in the middle, he plays hard. And we’ll be fine with Nielsen and Hunter on the outside spots. I was hoping to see more out of Morris. He let the linemen get to his legs to easy in my opinion but he bounces right back up. Kirksey needs to add some weight; he looks like a safety playing LB right now. I like what I saw from Poggi, he does well in space. He’ll eventually play that Greenway/Edds position. Bruce Davis shoots the gaps real well; I think he’ll play in running situations quite a bit. Troy Johnson was playing all three LB positions. I was surprised to see Austin Gray out there playing so much and running real well. He looks like the prototypical middle LB. He needs to add some speed though and if he does; I think he could be a lot like Angerer eventually.
Corner Backs
We have lots of corner back depth. Prater got beat early and grabbed his hamstring and then was done for the day. Bernstine played a little at corner but mainly played safety and looked real good at both. Hyde looked like a shut down guy; I don’t remember seeing anything completed in front of him. I was really impressed with Greg Castillo, had a nice pick six and played very aggressively. I like him more than I expected too!! Willie Lowe looked pretty good too; he looks to be the fastest of our corners. And finally, BJ Lowery, in most years, this guy would not redshirt. But this year, we may redshirt him due to our depth. He’s not as tall as I expected. I thought when we recruited him that he was listed as 6’0”, in the program, he’s listed at 5’11”; I think he’s 5’10”. But he covered McNutt, DJK, Davis, etc. and never backed down.
Safeties
First, Sash and Greenwood did very little telling me immediately that our coaches know how important they are to our team. In fact, they did not participate in any part of the scrimmage that involved tackling. And it was obvious to me that if one of them went down, Jordan Bernstine is the next man in. He will start at safety next year next to Sash without question. Of all the freshmen, maybe the one that impressed me the most was Tanner Miller. He’s a big kid; could easily be the size of Sash by this time next year. Actually ran with the number one defense for a while with Sash and Greenwood sitting out. He’s easing my concerns about the safety position for the upcoming years. It will be interesting to see if we redshirt him this year. With his speed, he has the potential to really help us in the punt and kickoff coverage units.
Kickers
I do think it’s important to note that Mossbrucker kicked first every time so I think as of right now, the job is his to lose. His leg is the weakest of the three contenders but his kicks have the most height and he’s the most consistent. Murray still has trouble getting his kicks up in the air quickly. Meyer from Dubuque has a powerful leg, just needs to become more consistent. He was a great walk on pickup though and give him 2-3 years and I can definitely see him having a chance at the full time job.
