As of right now, it's 17 days, 2 hours, 25 minutes and 24 seconds.

A vacation? Nope.

My birthday? Not quite.

The day I have my schedule cleared to do laundry? Uhhh...no.

When that countdown expires, it will be 11:05 a.m. on Sept. 4. I will be in Kinnick Stadium watching a football game. Specifically, an Iowa football game. And as with most things that spurn the use of countdown clocks weeks in advance, I could not be more pumped about it.

I'm confident many fellow Hawkeye fans feel the same way, and much of it has to do with 2010 possibly being the most anticipated season in Iowa football history. Like, ever. There's experience, talent, big guys, fast guys and some guys that are just flat out cool. But I'll just stop gushing there because the people that are reading this are excited as me and probably already know.

It's not just about happenings in Iowa City either. There's a little thing called football fever that is much more wide spread that causes quite the itch for sports fans this time of year.

I hope I don't sound like I'm wishing my life away, and to be perfectly honest, summer is my favorite time of the year. I would take a 90 degree day over 70 degrees 10 times out of 10, and my demands regarding the office air conditioner reflect it.

But when it comes to sports, I mean, what's going on right now? NASCAR??? Major league baseball with 19 of 30 teams all but out of division races? Even my sweet fantasy baseball team - which currently sits in first place, mind you - can't hold my baseball interest.

I reached my tipping point a few weeks ago as college football teams started practice. Now I'm eager to watch high school games on Friday nights. I'm ready to sit on the couch for 12 straight hours and watch college football on Saturdays, then do the same thing for NFL games on Sunday.

Football has the unique ability to stir up these kinds of emotions because of the fact that there aren't very many games in a season. Some may look at that as a drawback to the sport, but it makes each and every week so very meaningful.

Let's think about this for a second. I'm sitting here writing about a game weeks away involving Eastern Illinois. Eastern Illinois for Christ's sake. But when the sport is football, there's so much a fan can take in by just watching one game - especially when it's the first game of the year.

With all of that said, I certainly understand that I go a little overboard with all of this. Generally, I am a laid back, easy going guy - almost to a fault at times - but when it comes to Iowa football, I get wound so tight that one ill-fated turn of events sends the sky crumbling towards my feet. In fact, I wrote a piece last fall comparing one stinkin' loss to a swift strike to the acorns.

You'd think it would be a lot easier to just cool it, but the truth is, sometimes there are things we can't help.

But that's why I think sports are fun. I would much rather get excited about something and have it all fall apart in the blink of an eye than cruise through life with a robot's demeanor and make things easy on myself.

I've been told that the sweet is that much sweeter once you've had the sour. I've had a few sours, and you know what? The fall of 2010 is looking pretty sweet. I'm ready to go.

17 days, 0 hours, 53 minutes, 51 seconds.
