At this point in the year, prognostications come from all over the college football landscape. The preseason predictions that undoubtedly hold the most water to Hawk fans originate from those people closest to the Iowa program. The honorable Jon Miller recently laid out his Nostradamian vision for the 2010 Iowa football season. I hope for the sake of Hawkeye Nation he is correct. If come January 2011 Iowa is undefeated and playing Oklahoma, Jon might be wise to visit Las Vegas...often.
One game that consistently draws the concern of Iowa fans when prediction how the season might unfold is the game in the desert on September the 18th. Arizona, coached by Iowa alum Mike Stoops, boasts a strong cache of returning starters. However, the Arizona players aren't the reason for the consternation of Iowa fans. It's Mother Nature and Father Time.
Arizona is two hours behind and 10 degrees hotter than the great State of Iowa. Many fans point to these issues as the reason why Iowa might suffer the same fate they did when visiting in 2004...a drubbing at the hands of the Sun Devils. If Kirk Ferentz has demonstrated anything to Iowa fans during his tenure in Iowa City it is that he never makes the same mistake twice.
Kirk Ferentz will have his team prepared physically and mentally to withstand the time change and heat disparity that exists between Iowa and Arizona. Athletes the caliber of division 1 college football players are in peak physical condition. A two hour time change should not affect the ability of these athletes to perform.
With that in mind, the 2010 Iowa Hawkeyes are more talented than their counterparts from Tucson. Mother Nature and Father Time will not spoil this desert party...Captain Kirk won't allow it.
