As we all know coach Kirk Ferentz does not always like to go after the top prospects in the country. I think we have the best coach in country for a lot of reasons, but the reason that sticks out to me the most is that he consistently wins games, but rarely do we see a top 25 recurring class.
When Kirk recruits players I think he is looking more for hard work and dedication than anything. You look at Pat Angerer for example, he was a no name football player, farm kid out of Bettendorf IA. He had injury after injury and thought about quitting his sophomore year. But he never gave up and is respected throughout out the big ten, and thats what Kirk Ferentz wants all his players to be like. When all the Hawks were getting in trouble that killed Ferentz, he wants good ball players and he wants them to be class acts.
Once players get through the Kirk Ferentz system they go from being boys to kind, respected men. I have had the experience for that to be proven to me.
A couple years ago when Chad Greenway was a rookie with the vikings I was able to attend the Vikings training camp. I was standing in line,(13 years old at the time) waiting in line to get chads autograph. I was toward the end of the line so I was just praying the Greenway wouldn't leave before he got to the end. I had a Vikings jersey and a Hawkeye hat on ready to go, and I was standing tall hoping he would see the hat, and by gosh he did. Without signing a single autograph, he walked all the way down the line signed my hat and jersey and then walked back to the front and continued signing. That was awesome. I'm sure there are many more great, and current hawks out there, and that's thanks to Kirk Ferentz and staff
