The Cards traveled to Mount Ayr last Thursday and struggled early and often with the Raiders’ intense pressure and up-tempo style, falling 71-47.

After winning the opening tip, Bailey Boswell put the Cards up 1-0 from the free throw line with the first of her game-high 24 points. But before anyone knew it, a few quick scores for the Raiders tilted the score to 7-1.

The teams traded a couple baskets before Mount Ayr blew the game open with a 13-2 run to end the first quarter with a 22-9 lead.

Things didn’t improve in the second quarter for the Cards. Turnovers and the Raiders push-the-ball transition game doomed the Cards. And every time the girls would make a play, Mount Ayr had a quick answer.

After a turnover that turned into a quick two points for the Raiders, Sadie Greene picked her girl’s pocket and was fouled on the other end, setting up her banked 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 24-12.

But the Raiders answered with an 8-0 run, powered by their full-court press, to push their lead back to a comfy 32-12.

Elise Dale ended the draught with a pair of free throws, before the Cards gave up another 8-0 run.

The teams then exchanged a pair of baskets before Boswell hit a 3-pointer just before the buzzer. The Cards entered the locker room down 42-19.

The Cards were much more competitive in the second half, in large part because of their ability to draw fouls and get to the line.

In the first 90 seconds of the period, Boswell made a very nice move on the baseline to get the bucket and one. The Cards gave up a quick score in transition, and Boswell promptly went coast-to-coast to get another “2 and 1”.

Greene added another bucket to give the Cards another two points. But the Raiders continued to find the answers, scoring back-to-back baskets to push the score to 51-27.

After making a defensive stop, Dale drew a foul to get to the line, where she hit 1-2 to make it 51-28. But a foul on Janie Cornell led to Raider free throws, and Mount Ayr had the answer again.

Around the 2:30 mark in the third, Mount Ayr laid off the press. But that didn’t stop them from scoring nine points in a one-minute span, fueled by back-to-back-to-back Cardinal turnovers.

The third quarter ended with a 61-28 tally.

The Cards were making the extra pass in the 4th quarter, getting out and running a little bit, as well as earning trips to the line.

Greene had a nice dish to Boswell under the basket at the 7:20 mark, and Boswell paid her back a few minutes later on a fast break.

The teams cleared the benches around the 1:30 mark, and Mount Ayr closed it out for the 71-47 victory.

Boswell led all scorers with 24 points. Greene and Dale added 10 and seven points, respectively, while Brittany Binning, A.J. Meier, and Cornell each chipped in two points.

Boswell also led the team with six boards, while Binning and Dale both recorded four, Greene and Cornell three, Lydia Simon two, and Mary Akers one.

Greene, Binning, and Meier each notched a pair of assists, and Dale added one.

The Cardinals had 22 total turnovers as their record fell to 5-7.
