SHANE DIBONA SUFFERS ACHILLES INJURY
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa linebacker Shane DiBona suffered an achilles injury during practice on Wednesday and will likely miss the 2011 season.* The announcement was made Thursday by Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz.
DiBona underwent successful surgery Thursday morning at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and is expected to make a full recovery.* The surgery was performed by Dr. Ned Amendola, director of the UI Sports Medicine Center.
DiBona is a sophomore linebacker from Duxbury, Mass.* After a redshirt season in 2009, DiBona saw action in all 13 games a year ago, with two starts.* He recorded six solo tackles and seven assists.

Damn, that sucks.
Hate to see achilles injuries. You just never know how a player will come back from that.

Losing depth before the season even starts. Great. I assume he'll get a medical redshirt?

Re: DiNona injures Achilles done for year
We lost DiBona and DiNona on the same day? We're screwed...
Seriously though, tough break...anyone named Shane has to be a cool dude and it sucks that he got hurt.
Edit: I hope Dennis Dodd and Pat Forde don't see who did the surgery...they'll immediately question where he was during practice when the injury occurred and that he should've been there looking over the players...

I don't know what the deal is, but it seems like I've been seeing quite a few more Achilles tears in the past few weeks' headlines. This is like the third or fourth recently (in all sports, not just Iowa football)

There are something like 10 of them already in the NFL...muscles and bodies can get bigger and stronger, but tendons and ligaments can't...and no one will ever want to use the "S" word when it comes to football, but if this was happening in baseball, it would be all over the place.

Re:DiNona injures Achilles done for year
For the NFL it makes sense because of the lockout.

Actually, that's why HGH is such a big deal. Barry Bonds' injury in '99 (the first year he "allegedly" started taking PED's) is believed to have been the result of bulking up too much for his tendons and ligaments to hold the muscles. But HGH strengthens those tendons and ligaments, so that they can handle much more stress, which allows you to add a lot more muscle and avoid injury.

It's a double edged sword though as HGH, when abused, will cause bone growth which will lead to joint pain and arthritis.

Re: DiNona injures Achilles done for year
Iowa showed that they are vulnerable at LB last year, and I really do not feel any better this year....this is a big blow already, losing an experienced LB like Shane...sad for him,as he also go hurt last year....get well, young man,we need you for next year!

what the meltdown on HN. I know it sucks and we had issues at LB last year, but a lot more guys with practice and game reps will be playing this year. Much more comfortable this year than last. With Nielsen, Morris having significant time (both had none or very little before last year), and kirksey and hitchens both seeing some action last year and Davis back. I don't feel as bad.
