Re: Plus 1 Coming to CFB?
This would be a dream come true. I love the bowl system and this would totally keep that in tact while allowing for a better way to crown the true champion. There have been to many instances of 3 or 4 teams making a legit case to play for the title. I know there will always be people arguing that they should be 4th instead of 5th, etc, but you can't stop that no matter what # you pick. This adds just 1 more game for 2 out of 120 teams. This is win-win to me. I really hope this becomes reality soon.

If it means preventing a playoff, I'm all for it.

Re: Plus 1 Coming to CFB?
I love the idea put forward sometime this month, where in the event of more than two undefeated teams exist, then a plus one would be created (also occurring if only two undefeated's exist, but both not being represented in the Nat'l Champship game). then the Top 4 in BCS battle it out.
If the plus one takes place then, whoever held the previous championship game would host one of the play-in games, while that years selected "championship" site would get a play-in game plus the championship game.
Edit: this would however eliminate one BCS game, but on a rotation. then after the top 4 are taken the selection process would proceed as normal (same prerequisite- top 15 BCS)

Re: Plus 1 Coming to CFB?
Yes this is perfect, we get to keep the rose bowl tie and their is a 4 team playoff. Timing of this is very interesting to me, with the sec going to 14 and possibly getting even better u can almost give their champion an autobirth to the nc. By expanding it to 4 teams big ten and P12 ensure they have a bigger say in the championship. Also with the Rose Bowl insisting to pick big ten and pac twelve teams we still will have a stranglehold on that bowl if our champions play in the +1.

Re:Plus 1 Coming to CFB?
Sorry, but I just can't get excited. Just another half measure that will lead to more complaining.
My choice would be four superconferences, with eight divisions. The champions of the eight divisions play in the four major bowls based on seeding and conference alignment.
Then semi's and a final.
If you can't get in a superconference, you need to go FCS.

Creating 16 team super conferences would destroy college football. I would absolutely hate it. However, in this new world of college football it is a possibility. That being said it is very very clear that the powers that be want absolutely nothing to do with an NFL style playoff, so the +1 is the only feasible solution. I think the majority of people would be satisfied with this model.

I must be a little stupid here, can someone explain how this would work? Is it only a 4 team playoff?

Re: Plus 1 Coming to CFB?
Well with the SEC expanding to 16 teams and probably the other conferences to follow. I see 4 super conferences forming having the winner of those playing each other with the plus 1 being the winners of those.
Rose Bowl would be the PAC-16 and the Big Ten winner.
Sugar Bowl would be SEC winner and whatever other conference stands.
Then the national championship will be the winner of those two bowls.
The other bowls would be filled in by the other teams as usual.

Basically only 10 teams would go to a BCS bowl still, but the top 4 teams would be in a plus 1 playoff model. They would add 1 BCS site to accommodate.
Based on last year's standings, here is how it might have worked:
Rose
Virginia Tech
Wisconsin
Sugar
Arkansas
Ohio State
Fiesta
Oklahoma
Connecticut
Orange
#1 Auburn
#4 Stanford
Cotton (likely new BCS game)
#2 Oregon
#3 TCU
Winner of Orange and Cotton games would have played for BCS National Championship at Fiesta Bowl site.

This is coming. A&M leaving will be the domino that starts this change. Having four 16 team conferences work too well not to have a playoff.

Re: Plus 1 Coming to CFB?
I am not for a playoff, but this is probably the best way to keep that talk at bay.
If this happened, the Big Ten ADs must insist on a long term arrangement...like 30 years,to ensure some stability, and shut the Dan Wetzels up.
This could easily be adapted to the 4 superconference concept(which I am firmly against),also,so it is the best of bad options.
Screw the Mountain West, the Big East, and the rest...sure,they will sue,and the pols in Idaho and elsewhere will scream for their slighted state schools, but only 4 conferences need to be in this thing.

So how does the Rose and Pac12 & B1G auto matchup work then? They only play if both are ranked lower than 4? I don't see that happening very often.

Re: Plus 1 Coming to CFB?
I work at a FBS non-major conference school. We bleed money, even though we hold our own against major conference foes and beat one every now and then.
Going to a different and more appropriate system would help. There are just too many schools that are getting killed trying to pretend to be real FBS, when they are not.

What school? And if you don't want to say that, which conference? Just curious.
