Where do coaches learn to do that monotone speech thing they do?

Re: Just Askin' With Kirk

I asked question #5. It was a little too general. I suspect he was thinking "we're doing all we can already to be a consistent conference championship contender and make an occasional serious run at a MNC". Or maybe something less polite like, "Hey, as**ole, you think if I knew what we needed to do (differently) we wouldn't already be doing it?" ;^)

I'm a very big fan of KF, and think he's really overachieved(it is tough place to recruit from relative to the "brand" programs and, often, their population bases) in IC but, believe the program has some minor but correctable flaws that are fairly chronic.

I guess what I'm saying is, way to blow off the question, coach! ;^)

seriously? what do you expect him to say?

I'm 42 and Iowa has one BCS-level bowl victory in my lifetime. Last one prior being in the 50s. He is doing a great job.

No question he's done a great job. I've never suggested otherwise. As I said I'm a very big fan of him and that's been through the good times and the bad(I was saying the same in 2007). I wasn't being critical of him, I just wanted to know if there was something he though they could do differently to improve the program. Even, generically like recruit better. Ferentz is an A+ coach(and his staff in player devo)but, is an A+ coach in recruiting? Honestly? I think he's/his staff overall, is a "B/B+" coach as a recruiter. Solid, good, but not outstanding. Couldn't he just have responded well, I think we need to get some more speed at the skill positions than we've traditionally had or maybe, I really like the trajectory of how we've done of late and think some of that is attributable to improved QB play. If that kind of high level QB play continues i see us being right there for conference championships and time-and-again a MNC run. I wasn't looking for him to throw anyone under the bus or explain some significant change he wanted in schemes or players. At any rate it was mostly my fault for asking such a general question. I should have couched it like "Coach, given the limited talent base Iowa recruits from do you think you can get the program to be a consistent conference championship contender and make an occasional serious run at a MNC? I'm sure many of us have wondered and have speculated on what "we" could do differently to improve the program. I was maybe unartful about it, but I though he should be asked.

The last question and answer is why KF is not only a great coach but one hell of a guy.

If he thinks he needs too, then he is...

Like with most of us, he probably feels there are some things the program needs to improve on but, he'd rather not share it with the public. I respect that, but I don't think he get's a complete pass in identifying any flaws in the program. He tends to deflect questions that might even be remotely deemed as critical/controversial so I wasn't surprised. But, I don't think being a Hawkeye fan is to be a mindless automaton that must slavishly believe that the program is without flaws or that the head coach is completely blameless(and unaccountable) for any flaws that exist. Being a fan isn't having blind faith. It's recognizing that flaws exist but, that doesn't alter your loyalty to the man or the program. It's a little ironic that I'm having this conversation as over the years I've been the one who often says to fellow fans(and opponents)that Kirk deserves more credit for the success of the program. The very stats that he provides in response to my question I've quoted to people. So, this is "through the looking glass" for me.
