'Pre-Plus 1': a non-playoff method of determining a champ on the field
In my HawkeyeNation user blog, I have posted a lengthy proposal I emailed to my Dad last year in which I outline an idea I had which I call the 'pre-Plus 1' system.
Essentially, the teams with the BEST RECORDS (completely objective) duke it out on the field to close the REGULAR SEASON. The CFB braintrust just needs to hatch plans varying based on differing numbers of unbeatens and 1-loss teams.
It would take an admittedly exhausting amount of legislative-like planning out of endless scenarios, but I think that's what it would take to make a lot more people happy than lazily saying 'top 2', 'top 8', or 'top 16' is the best number for every year; every year is different.
If you want the details, you can read my HN blog entry, but here's how this year MIGHT look (this makes more sense in the blog):
*Under my system, everyone would be playing their 12th game this weekend, so I've subtracted one 'cupcake' win for everyone.
LSU (12-0): home vs. Houston (11-1). The Tigers are in the Sugar Bowl where they will play for the National Championship regardless of Houston result as they were the only unbeaten through all of the SCHEDULED games. The Cougars, as the lowest ranked 1-loss team, are still in the mix but they have to play back in the HARD way.
Other 12/10 games:
#7 Boise State (10-1) at #2 Alabama (10-1)
#4 Stanford (10-1) at #3 Oklahoma State (10-1)
...
Auburn (6-5, SEC #6) at Iowa (6-5, B1G #6)
Iowa State (5-6, Big XII #8) at Ohio State (5-6, B1G #8)
...(and so forth, with location and matchup pre-determined by conf. standing)
12/17 games:
(As needed to eliminate 1-loss teams based on Houston/LSU result).
**Or, the thing might be cleaned up considerably with a conference champion requirement, leaving the only relevant (for NC purposes) 12/10 game as Boise State at Okie State for a trip to New Orleans to play LSU in the Sugar Bowl.
