Re: our new coach...
The demise of the Jefferson football program has always amazed me. When it opened in the fall of 1957, Jefferson was the dominate team in the state. It produced wonderful players like Larry Lawrence, Dave Long, B.J. Trickey, etc. The J-Hawks won the first large school championship in 1972.
For some reason, which I don't completely understand, Jeff's football program went into the toilet after Kennedy was built. Those blue collar kids on the west side just hated the "country club set" at Wash. The Wash-Jeff rivalry back in the day was one of the best in the country. KCRG used to televise the games & Kingston still sold-out.
The reason Kennedy was built was because Wash & Jeff had over 2,500 students in three classes. Between the hill & the front drive, Wash had numerous portable class rooms. Now, it is my understanding, Wash & Jeff have only 1,200 students in four classes.
