Playing calling in practice question

Does anyone know about play calling in practice for the Hawkeyes? My question is, in practice who is calling the offensive plays for the 2nd team? In high school, sometimes we would have an assistant calling plays for the 2nd team and not the OC. I am curious to know who that has been for the Hawkeyes, if they did this at all.

Having someone with ZERO play calling experience is a huge risk. Play calling experience would be/should be preferred. But I have this feeling that it isn't going to matter to Ferentz. Which is ironic, as he is so risk-averse. What if they simple are not that great at it? Or worse yet, what if they suck?? I am not a looking forward to being 79th in the country in total offense, again.

Calling a base defense is one thing, since there are not that many options. Calling any offense is much more challenging, than a base defense. Having someone who is proven would take a load off of my shoulders. You are rolling the dice by picking someone without any play calling experience what so ever...

There is a lot of love out there for Erik Campbell. But what about Eric Johnson? He has been with the program much longer. Where is the loyalty to EJ? I really just want someone with experience in this position. Even if just in practice...

Re: Playing calling in practice question

The offensive coordinator works with the offense (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th string, etc). The defensive coordinator works with the defense (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th string, etc).
They do not have position coaches calling plays for the 2nd and 3rd string. At the college and pro level the difference in 2nd and 3rd string is the amount of reps you get at practice. Obviously 1st team gets the most reps and then 2nd and so on.

Re: Playing calling in practice question

the question should be if the team ever goes live against a scout team who calls those plays. because that coach would have a little experience and should understand it a little.

i am not sure how much playcalling experience you need. josh mcdaniels had none before he started doing it for the patriots. so if you find someone who understands what to do is more important than someone who has done it before. now if the best guy is a guy who has playcalling experience then hire him. if the best guy doesnt have that experience then he will get it in a few months.

Tom Brady has been allowed to call his own plays forever. So McDaniels might not be the best example. But I get your point, he knows what to do. Denver probably should have given him more of a chance before firing him.

The person that calls the plays for the scout teams against the first/second team d's are running plays that they believe the opponent will be running against them. If they don't have an upcoming opponent(spring and summer camp) they will be experimenting with new players learning the offense that Iowa runs, running new plays, and also running plays that are problematic for Iowa's base defense.

Something like that. When they are scrimmaging, which happens all the time, is there another coach possibly calling plays... Probably not as only one side has the ball at a time, and the HC isn't calling the plays (e.g. Hayden) and can concentrate on either the O or D.

I am not sure I would count the Patriots (or the Colts or Saints) OC as needing much experience. As their QBs call the plays, and on almost all the plays that count, they have the final say. The last QB we had calling any play was Drew Tate. ~ other than when our offense exploded this last season for a couple quarters, when JV was calling the no-huddle. Although a lot of that was scripted, I believe.
