In 1949, Iowa went 4-5 and played non-conference games against Notre Dame, UCLA, and Oregon. Future Bears quarterback Rudy Bukich, who was rumored to have been capable of throwing the ball 100 yards, was a freshman for Iowa in 1949; he transferred to USC following the season.
