Chris Paul trade?

I readily admit, I don't follow the NBA much. So can someone help me with this? Is it part of the deal that New Orleans gets the Timberwolves 1st round pick?
If so, why would that be? What has Minnesota got to do with it?

Re: Chris Paul trade?

The Clippers had the T-wolves 2012 first round pick thanks to the 2005 Sam Cassell-Marko Jaric blockbuster trade.

Didn't look at the details but it's either a three way trade or they already traded their first round pick away in a previous deal.

Re: Chris Paul trade?

On August 15, 2005, Minnesota traded Sam Cassell and a conditional first round pick to the Clippers for Marko Jaric and Lionel Chalmers. Now that all the earlier protections and conditions have come off the pick, it has become an unprotected 2012 first round pick. Seeing as how Minnesota will have a top-8 (probably top-5) pick in what should be the deepest draft in years, the Hornets got a great deal.

Hoiberg was still an active player at the time of the trade. He didn't officially retire until the spring of '06.
