Future of Iowa Vs Iowa State

First let me start with a story.

I grew up in DesMoines. When i was young my mom and dad divorced and a few years latter she married a man named rick. Rick was from GrandIsland and was a die hard husker fan. I didnt know what it ment to be a husker fan but whatever. As you can imagine the 80s and 90s were a good to husker fans and because i was around that family i watched the games. Hold on this isnt a troll thread. After around 1999 they divorced and i was seperated from that family. During that time i still followed the huskers but not as well. It wasnt because they werent winning it was that i didnt have passion to drive it. Around 2005 i meet my future wife and her family. Her family is die hard cyclone fans and let me know it every day. I told them i was a husker fan but havent followed it in years. What happened after i told them that were many many months of trash talk from them to me. I didnt get fired up because i wasnt into it that much anymore. So then i went to my first ISU vs Nebraska game at Jack Trice and thats when i saw the passion. During the McCarney years there was a different feel in IowaState. Nebraska lost that year and i got lots and lots of taunting from the stadium to the car. Even all the way home. It fueled my passion for Husker football again and i started getting into it more and more.

Now i told you that story to tell you this. Iowa and Iowa State need eachother. Your 2 universities drive eachother internally to be passionate for your programs. Iowa and Iowa State both have there ups and downs in each in all sports but its the internal bickering between the fan bases that drive it. It makes you not only want to win the seasonal game but when your team does good all season it gives you bragging rights. How many Championships the Iowa wrestling team has. How many times Ferenz got beat by McCarny in football. Ive heard both sides of the coin on how they want to cancel the series between the teams but you know what. I think it would take some of the passion out of it for you. It wouldnt be any fun if Iowa was the only team on the block. And that quite possibly could be why nebraska fans are so arrogant. No one is around to challange them, Iowa will be the closest central fan base to do that. Our 2 biggest rivals Colorado and Missouri we werent close to there fanbase. You have no one to put you in check or kick you down a peg. You miss out on alot when you dont have that. If nebraska didnt do that well in the 80s and 90s i dont think the fans would be as passionate as they are today. No one would of been around to boost that up and they would of fallen to the wayside. As much as you hate eachother it drives your passion for college sports alike. This was inspired from looking at your new rivalry trophy and it reading all your comments about how both teams dislike it. Heres to a long tradation in playing eachother and hopefully a better trophy.

Re: Future of Iowa Vs Iowa State

Certainly there are some Hawkeye fans who "hate" the Cyclones and vice versa. But I think there are just as many Hawkeye fans who look at ISU and think......meh.

Im much more excited to play Nebraska than ISU.

I, for one, root for Iowa whenever they are not playing ISU. As for Nebraska...if you have nothing good to say, remain silent is my policy.

Can we then assume that you'll never make another comment on this board?

Nice post and good perspective there BRPW. I know that I for one would miss the annual game against them as much as I might not want to admit it when not in a reflective mood.

If this was the case you definitely wouldn't have 6415 posts...

We do not need each other. Our schools got along just fine for over 40 years not playing each other. Iowa Won the Rose bowl and 3 conference titles during that time period....and of course Iowa State didn't win anything.. SOunds like same old same old to me.

The OP said that the two teams need each other. Do you agree that Iowa needs ISU? I can't think of much that Iowa needs from the Clones.

They do a good job at filling the "lil bruder" position so they at least have that going for them.

Since 2005 Nebraska has not lost in Ames (06, 08, 10). I will assume that this story is not made up and you met your future wife in early 2004 to allow for months and months of trash talk before your first ISU/Nebraska game in Ames. So now when somebody asks you when you met you can say early 2004 instead of around 2005. Your future wife will be so happy for you knowing that. No need to thank me, just helping a fellow man out when I can.

That's pretty funny right there!
