About ISU WRs

Apart from Reynolds ... who was their biggest and probably most physical WR ... I've really been struck by ISU's overall lack of size at WR. Their only other "big guy" at WR is a convert from QB (Ja'Quarius Daniels) ... and thus, will be a bit of a project.

Here are the heights/sizes of ISU's leading candidates at WR:

- Reynolds [SR], 6-2/208
- Darks [SR], 6-1/189
- Lenz [JR], 6-0/197
- Horne [JR], 5-9/175
- West [FR], 5-7/164
- Bundrage [FR], 6-1/176

Bundrage seems like a pretty promising kid ... but he's still young and hasn't had much time working with the strength and conditioning coaches yet. I don't doubt that they're trying to balance the trade-offs so that they can put a bit more speed on the field. However, I don't see a guy they have who will necessarily be great at beating jams from bigger, more physical DBs.

For the sake of compariso, here is what Iowa brings to the table at WR:

- McNutt [SR], 6-4/215
- Davis [JR], 6-3/215
- Staggs [JR], 6-3/195
- Shumpert [SO], 6-3/187
- Martin-Manley [FR], 6-0/205
- Hillyer [FR], 6-4/195
- Grant [FR], 6-3/195

Re: About ISU WRs

Rhoads just said today that Brundrage and Daniels will play this year. Pretty awesome to hear on Daniels as he is 6'4 220 lbs and was a QB in HS. He must be a hell of an athlete to come in and play WR for a couple weeks and be able to play

They are starting to recruit more size as well. Quan West is a 6'4 WR from Texas that we got over Michigan and will be here next year.

I think WR speed was so bad when they got here that they focused on that more than size. And let's be honest, Iowa State isn't going to get many 6'3 guys that are fast. Most those guys go to better programs

Re: About ISU WRs

Daniels will only play because Jennert caught a case of the stupids. Losing a legitmate 6-7 WR hurts a team like ISU that has no size. Rhoads is appearing to try and rectify this with Quan West, a 6-4 WR, coming aboard next year.

ISU has pretty much been recrutiing smaller guys to play the position the last few years. TTU had some of its best years with smaller guys, so it can be done. I think the offense either works this year, or Herman finds another job.

Losing Jennert hardly hurts at all. He was going to barely see the field this year anyways. From what I have heard is that his blocking ability was very poor.

The blocking ability of most young guys is poor.

I would like to have a few bigger WRs, but our current system doesn't really call for that. We need more of the shifty, quick guys.

As others have indicated ... my guess is that he'll have to play more based on need of the team. Being such a young guy ... he's likely going to behind the curve when it comes to route-running and blocking. However, he has the sort of size to be able to be physical and beat jams.

From what CPR said a few years ago ... the emphasis seemed to be placed more on speed. I don't think that CPR cared less whether or not the guy was short or not.

Iowa doesn't have much luck going after tall, fast guys either.

Well I bet he plays more than Junior/Senior guys that have been here for 2 years and played WR their whole life. We signed other freshmen WR's who had more offers than this kid and he is playing over them despite only being a WR for a couple weeks. That alone gets me very excited about his potential

According a booster that was at the practice the day you guys announced who the starting QB was, the recievers were pretty underwhelming. He wasn't all that impressed with the QB play either, but I wouldn't say the guy is the most optimistic person on earth. Just one guys opinion, but it might explain needing to get freshman out on the field at the receiver position.

I'm as hard as the WR's as anyone. They have been terrible. They need to be better.

With that said, the practice the other day had 3 of our top 4 WR's out. Not to surprising that we looked bad.

This is something I didn't want to know.

This was his 3rd year in college. If he didn't get it by now, he probably never would have.

Re: About ISU WRs

You forgot Daniels, who will NOT be redshirting this year as per Rhoads. As a group, they seem decent sized.

- Daniels (FR), 6-3/230

- Reynolds [SR], 6-2/208
- Darks [SR], 6-1/189
- Lenz [JR], 6-0/197
- Horne [JR], 5-9/175
- West [FR], 5-7/164
- Bundrage [FR], 6-1/176
