Finding Steele

Does anyone know the story of how Jantz came to be a Cyclone? From what I know, he was a really good JC player, might have even been an AA. Seems like an unlikely place for him to land. Great pick up for Cy.

I dont know but how many BCS teams could virtually guarantee him a starting spot?

I agree with you. I find it hard to believe that based on pure talent, he isn't in the upper half of BCS quarterbacks already. You talk about intangibles......what did Iowa State do to deserve this.

I think you need to watch the movie "Rudy" and substitute the name Steel Pantz whenever you hear Rudy.

I think our defense made him look better than he is.

This. Jantz is decent but overall he won't be as good the rest of the season as he was against us. We are one of the few teams left in college football that tries to create all of it's pressure on the QB with it's front four, and we don't have the manpower up front to do that this year. Most teams on defense use multiple blitz packages to keep the opposing QB guessing. UNI had Jantz running scared because they dialed up the pressure. We barely blitzed and you saw the results. Most of the defenses ISU runs into will blitz more often.

It's possible, but you did blitz quite a bit. One time was very costly and it left Lenz wide open. It's only game two, so who knows how he will hold up the rest of the season, but I'm hopeful.

When you're Iowa and don't blitz often when they do blitz it's unnatural. Our LB's and DB's are used to being asked to drop back into coverage almost every play. When you ask them to blitz it puts them out of their comfort zone. They don't hide or sell it very well.

Re: Finding Steele

He is a good QB. He could start for a lot of teams. Jantz is quick and has a good arm. cant teach that.

Re: Finding Steele

The good news is that ISU will likely face some Big12 teams with really bad run defenses. KSU, KU, TTech, and BU are in the conversation. There will be some games where Jantz might not have to do a ton, and Johnson/White can take the lead role.

Yeah, we blitzed more than average, but like you pointed out we tend to look awkward blitzing. It's usually pretty transparent that the blitz is on and our blitzers did a horrible job of getting to the QB (or ISU did an awesome job of protecting...a little of both, I guess).

The blitzes Iowa ran yesterday were reminiscent of the Humpal/Klink blitz packages of the 2006-2007 run. Ruh Roh.
