The BiPolar 12 Conference Map

Andy Katz was reporting that West Virginia was the leading Big 12 replacement for Missouri if they exit to the SEC. It sounds like the major powers of the conference (Texas) wants to remain at 10 teams. Below is a conference map. The nearest Big 12 location to Morgantown WV is Ames, 871 highway miles. The farthest distance is Lubbock, a whopping 1,465 miles. The average distance is over 1000+ miles.

This looks like a horrific idea. If West Virginia is dumb enough to become part of this menagerie then they indeed fulfill the stereotype of West Virginian.

That is one trip, not multiple like WV would make in the Big 12.

Nebraska's average distance is 628 miles to all B1G schools. West Virginia's average distance would be 1,148 miles, nearly double. Right now it is one of those situations where it is a bad idea, but will do it anyway. It might work if the members can convince Texas to add Louisville and Cincinnati as well, but it sounds like sharing the pie 12 ways is not the desire.

It's a better situation for WVU than it is for Hawaii having to come to the main land for every away game and at least WVU is competitive in athletics. If I was a WVU fan, I wouldn't be overly excited about the prospect of having to travel all of those miles, but it could aways be worse.

I think it would be a good move for the Big East to offer Kansas, Kansas St., and Iowa St.

That'd be a dumb move for them to to move to a non BCS conference with teams 1,000 miles away.

Morgantown is about 100 miles closer to Ames than Austin is.

Agreed, ISU, KSU and KU need a 12 team conference. They can't expect to compete UT and OU every year. They need a winnable division. Adding WVU, Louisville, and Cincy would provide equal talent schools would provide that.

Bingo. When fans have to drive through 3 or 4 states that aren't in the conference to get to a school that is... something is out of whack.

Even ISU is "detached" from the primary group of TX, OK & KS..though the distance is not extreme.
