Re: nebraska on probation?

I just saw that as well. Sounds kind of harsh, but who knows how bad it was. I mean they could have been getting two extra books per class and selling them back at 1 or 2 hundred each. Still kind of lame if you ask me. Why not just make it so they have to return the books when done with them, and since they didnt pay for them, they dont get any money back for them?

Re: nebraska on probation?

Hoping to find an article that is actually informative. The one I posted is pretty lame. Will see if I can find anything else with substance. Seems like it is a multi-sport problem.

Re: nebraska on probation?

Student-athletes were being allowed to use scholarship money to purchase "recommended" textbooks from the bookstore in addition to "required" books, apparently because someone failed to alert the bookstore? Seems like small potatoes to me. Meanwhile, tOSU fails to fully disclose the sale or exchange of memorabilia by its athletes for personal financial gain but essentially gets a slap on the wrist by the NCAA, one that allows it to fire its a coach and hire the one new one who could assemble one of the top football recruiting classes in the country?

Sounds fair to me.

As much as I dislike Nebraska and relish the though of them on probation, I just cant help but think that this is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with the NCAA.

I agree with both of you. Also, apparently we "self reported" these infractions which will usually get you some leniency. Seems a little harsh for the situation, but I'm a little biased.

Re: nebraska on probation?

I don't think that's fair. How is this different than what happened to cam newton? These kids over-bought with the intention of making money.

Well, Cam's dad demanded money for his services. Due to staff turnover and miscommunication, NU student/athletes were given "optional" text books that could possibly help them get a better education or grades. And NU self-reported the incident.

Where did you infer (or make that up) that from?

I'm assuming you were being sarcastic. But you're right, it's not fair. Auburn got nothing for Cam, and NU got 2 years probabtion and a had to pay a fine for giving scholarship athletes books.

Re: nebraska on probation?

But by probation, it simply means they're in a period where if they have further slip ups they could lose things like scholarships and bowl eligibility, but as of now they just have been fined. So it just tightens down on some freedoms they might normally have but really isn't all that much of a punishment right?

Correct. If something else happens, it could mean additional sanctions. And if it wasn't clear, I believe that it was over all sports, not just football or basketball.
