Re: Greg Davis Transcript from 3/5

I kind of got the same feeling after reading this interview as I had after watching Fran's opening press conference. I think this is an outstanding hire.
    You're in the Danger Zone!

The kids still have to execute and we have a lot of holes to fill.

It has worked for him and will continue to work for him.

I think coordinators should already have in mind from their game plan what adjustments they might have to make.

I would think they better be prepared to see what unfolds on the field and make adjustments.

GDavis thinks he can do it from the press box and he probably can.

I am a fan of your OC in the box for three reasons- he can see how defenses adjust similar to watching film, he will be able to see defensive substitutions on his own and not need a GA to call them into him- meaning playcalls will be a bit faster and more efficient and finally it will really help early in the season eliminating dumb procedure penalties- if a TE or receiver are lined up wrong Davis can correct it immediately.

I think that it shows a ton of confidence in Raih as well, assuming he is going to come back as a GA and be a defacto QB coach. I am really excited to see the direction the offense goes and expect Vandy to do big things next season.

    Q. How did the process start? Did you reach out to Coach or did Coach reach out to you? COACH GREG DAVIS: "He called me back a couple of days later and said, "I hired Ken O'Keefe."I said, "That's great. Since you've done that, how about calling Kirk for me."About that same time, I sent Kirk a text and I said, "Hey, if this rumor is true, I would love to have the opportunity to visit with you." So that's kind of how it started.

    Q. Are you a press box guy or do you like to coach from the sidelines?COACH GREG DAVIS: I'm a press box guy, especially in Iowa, I'm a press box guy. It allows me to set above all of the emotion. I've worked from the boundary before, and you're just removed.

    Q. First time here with the players. Do you wear your National Championship ring? COACH GREG DAVIS: No. That thing's ‑‑ you probably won't ever see it. I'm not a big ring guy, anyway. But we are interested in starting ‑‑ getting a ring for here.

    Q. The Big Ten versus Texas, is there a difference in your mind? COACH GREG DAVIS: ...From the very first time Kirk and I started talking, it was about blending philosophy, about blending the way we call things, and creating something that was 2012. That's what we are trying to do.

    Q. How will your connections down in Texas help you recruiting‑wise? COACH GREG DAVIS: ...I probably had 20 high school coaches that have called and said, hey, if y'all do come this way, you know, make sure you come by and see us; and if I don't have one, I can tell you where one's at.Recruiting is a lot about relationships; is about building relationships, so that won't change.

    Q. You played against Iowa in the Alamo Bowl in 2006. What do you remember from that game? Can you share that with us? COACH GREG DAVIS: ...The game itself was a great game; the wrong team won. But it was a great game and we were fortunate. There was a tight end delay that might not have been called if the game would have been up here. But, hey, that's the way it is. (Laughter) I do remember that play.

    Q. You talked about blending philosophies. Does this mean the Iowa offensive players are going to have a brand new playbook and brand new terminology when they come in this year?
COACH GREG DAVIS: I think it means it's going to be blended. Based on where we are going with the playbook, there will be a lot of change. There will be a lot of different things that you will see.
loved these responses. especially the response to the ring question. and flat out saying the offense is going to be different.

I love that Davis wants to be here. he contacted us and he recognized the quality of this program and its fan base. I think he is genuinely thrilled to be a hawkeye and I'm thrilled to have him be one.

Don't overlook CJ Beathard; we may have had a gem fall into our laps with that one. Also, I really like what I'm hearing from this guy. Sounds like Kirk is going to give him a little freedom. Power running combined with an improved passing game is the hoped-for product.

    1. So now we have a OC who is much better than the DC....at meeting the press. A complete reversal compared to the previous staff when Norm usually pasted the floor with Ken.

    2. Very very very very annoying to note that Philbin apparently passed on GD for the KOK.

They have phones on sideline to the box. Better in the box to go over what he can see. Frankly KOK was terrible at communication in part because he had no Birdseye view. Erb was an abortion in the box. This is a good deal.

I doubt Davis is "licking his lips" in regards to JR. he would have very little to evaluate him on. I do think he is excited about the tools JVB brings to table.

I've always liked the OC to be in the press box. They can see the whole field and be able to notice the way the secondary is moving. It's a completely different vantage point and I'm not sure why you wouldn't take advantage of that. You can always get guys on the headset to talk them down from the ledge.

He seemed like he's going to be aggressive and try to win games with what's working. I like it.
