Hawks Snag Big Time Back

Hawks Snag Big Time Back

Iowa Recruiting Coordinator Eric Johnson tweeted on Sunday night that the Hawkeyes had a new member of the family. It was widely known that Wisconsin prep back Melvin Gordon was going to be in town late this weekend…

Put two and two together, plus Twitter confirmation from Rob Howe of HawkeyeInsider.com, and you have Gordon in the fold for the Hawkeyes…

Take a look at his Scout.com profile here.

Hei s 6-1, 190 and runs a 4.50 forty. In addition to his Iowa offer, he had standing offers from Michigan, Wisconsin, Tennessee, MSU, Cincy, Illinois, Iowa State, Louisville, Indiana, Minnesota and more…he was also invited to Alabama’s summer camp, and he attended, but did not have an offer.

He is one of the best backs in the Midwest, coming out of Kenosha, Wisconsin. He has been consistent in his love for the Hawkeyes in recent weeks. Here is a snippet of what he told Allen Wallace of Scout.com one month ago:

“I like everything about Iowa. There’s nothing wrong with that program. They’ve got a great head coach. He always steers them in the right direction and I like how he’s real. He’s straightforward and tells you things that are true. Coach Ferentz says you come in and work and you will get back what you put in.”

He is Iowa’s 14th known verbal commitment, the most by the end of August for any one Iowa recruiting class. It tops last year’s ‘record pace’ as Iowa had 12 commits by the end of August. It’s important to remind folks that these are all kids that Iowa has offered scholarships to based off of junior film and/or camp workouts. Therefore, these are priority targets for Iowa and for the second year in a row, they are getting a high percentage of their commitments from kids they identified early in the recruiting process. Given’s Iowa’s penchant for spotting and then developing talent, I continue to say that Kirk Ferentz has his program rolling at a level previously unseen.
