Iowa Adds Walk On Guard

Iowa Adds Walk On Guard

Rob Howe from HawkeyeInsider.com reported yesterday that Iowa has added point guard Stephen McCarty from Detroit to the basketball team: click here to read Howe’s interview.

McCarty will walk on to the program and be able to play next year.  Iowa has just one point guard on the roster and that’s Cully Payne.

McCarty has a connection to Iowa basketball; Devyn Marble, a Class of 2010 signee with Iowa is his cousin.

This could signal that Iowa isn’t going to add any more players this spring, or perhaps Coco Ware, who will have just one year of eligibility.  We’ll talk more about that in the coming days as the tea leaves begin to make more sense.

Another great move by Coach Fran, an off-season that hasn’t been marred by anything. These additions (Basabe, Stokes and now McCarty) are all building blocks for the future of the program.
    GO HAWKS!

How does adding two walk ons spell good things for the future of Iowa basketball? I am 100 percent behind Fran but let’s not get too carried away too soon with any/every move he makes … Adding two walk ons and expecting them to compete in the Big 10 is risky when it comes to basketball .. There are not many walk ons who succeed in Big 10 basketball …

FM was given a tight window to get ANY players to come. The program is at it’s lowest EVER point. All indications point to FM getting plenty of looks from 11 and 12 kids… walkons will help stand in the gap untill then.

Walkons should help ensure there are enough bodies to have a real practice session. I know that was problem in TL’s first year and maybe later too. I am not counting on significant playing time from walkons but IF they contribute, GREAT !!!!!

McCarty turned down a couple offers to play with his cousin, how much will he contribute, don’t know, but it isn’t a given that a scholarship player will contribute anymore than either of the walk-ons. The great move is that Coach Fran is rekindling ties to alumni and listening to alumni, something the prior two coaches did not do. From what I have read, each of these walk-ons could be contributors down the road, again building blocks for the FUTURE. Iowa will not turn around completely in the first or second year. The Hawks do have a chance to finish .500 or better this season. Familiar faces for four years walk-on or not, is a good thing, it provides stability. I am not going overboard by my statement, every player that Coach Fran brings in has a purpose and a reason they are in the Iowa program, he has shown already that he has a plan and a vision, if you don’t see it yet then there is a problem.
