According to Rob Howe of iowa.scout.com, Iowa City High quarterback A.J. Derby has committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Derby is a 6-4, 220-pound powerhouse who had offers from a veritable ‘who’s who’ of college football, including but not limited to Florida, Michigan, Alabama and scores of others. He is the son of former Iowa linebacker John Derby.

Jon Miller’s Take: Derby projects at several positions at the next level. He showed Iowa he could play quarterback when they had him in at camp this summer. Some wonder if he might not wind up at linebacker, defensive end or tight end before all is said and done. No matter where he winds up, Derby is going to make an impact for the Hawkeyes down the line. He doesn’t just project at those positions, he projects as a very good prospect at those positions.

That being said, Iowa told more than a few quarterbacks in the Class of 2010 that they had just one spot for a signal caller, and that they were going to wait until Derby made his decision. With a pair of late commitments coming in late September, the Hawkeyes were running out of scholarships earlier than they ever have. Derby elected to pull the trigger and end his process. With at least 16 known verbal commitments, and possibly as many as 18, the Hawkeyes are nearly done with their Class of 2009. This is the most commitments at this stage of the game in the Ferentz era.

What is most significant about this class so far, is that these are players that Iowa targeted early on, players they offered based off of junior film and/or performances in their camp. Iowa targeted their prospects and for the most part, they hit those targets.
