The Top Ranked Iowa wrestling program swept the Iowa City Duals on Friday and extended its unbeaten streak to 80 dual meets.

The University of Iowa wrestling team extended its unbeaten dual winning streak to 80 games Friday with wins over Baker (47-3), Cornell College (42-0) and Iowa Central (37-6) inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tom Brands earned his 100th win as Iowa’s head wrestling coach as Iowa swept the Iowa City Duals for the fourth time in as many seasons. Brands owns a 100-6-1 record since taking over the Hawkeye program in 2006. The Hawkeyes recorded nine pins while posting a 27-3 record in the three duals.

Seven Hawkeyes recorded perfect 3-0 marks in the duals, including 125-pounder Matt McDonough, 174-pounder Ethen Lofthouse and heavyweight Bobby Telford. All three Hawkeyes recorded a pair of pins and a bonus-point victory. McDonough opened the three-dual event with a second period pin against Baker’s Bo Newport and Telford sent the crowd of 8,527 home with a first period pin against Central’s Lonnie Brown. McDonough added a first period pin against Jacob Colon (Central). Telford put Baker’s Dylan Berg on his back in 2:17. Lofthouse recorded a fall against Baker’s Clarence Brown in the opening period before pinning Cornell’s Brent Hamm in 1:06, the fastest fall of the night.

Redshirt freshman Mike Evans, sophomores Tony Ramos and Derek St. John, and senior Montell Marion also posted perfect 3-0 marks. Evans, Ramos and Marion recorded one pin each. St. John added two technical falls. Twenty-two of Iowa’s 27 wins earned bonus points.

Senior Vinnie Wagner made his first career appearance in front of the Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd. The 184-pounder earned a 21-8 major decision over Cornell’s Andrew Roberts.

Junior Grant Gambrall returned to the mat for the first time since winning the third-place bout at last season’s NCAA Championships. Gambrall made his first career appearance at 197 pounds and used 1:35 of riding time to earn a 4-3 decision over Cornell’s Alex Coolidge.

Redshirt freshman Jeremy Fahler earned a pair of major decisions in each of his 184-pound bouts. Fahler topped Baker’s Parker Owen 9-1 before recording a 12-4 win over Iowa Central’s Cristian Mays.

Sophomore Tomas Lira split a pair of decisions at 197 pounds. Redshirt freshman Jacob Ballweg lost two of his three decisions while competing at 149 pounds.

The Hawkeyes return to action Dec. 2 when they host sixth-ranked Illinois on Mediacom Mat inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The dual will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Kids five and under are admitted free to all home wrestling events. The Iowa-Illinois dual will be streamed live on btn.com via Hawkeye All-Access, a subscription service committed to providing quality coverage of University of Iowa athletic events. The Hawkeyes face in-state rival Iowa State in Ames on Dec. 4. The Cyclones host Iowa inside Hilton Coliseum at 2 p.m. Steven Grace and Mark Ironside will broadcast both weekend duals on AM-800 KXIC.

The latest goings on and conversations related to Black and Gold linked here, plus some comments of our own.

Marc Morehouse of The Gazette is playing some catchup from some time off, and has a good rundown or aggregate of Iowa’s known TV times for the 2011 season.

He also accurately notes the wasteland that is Big Ten football viewing for 9/24 when he writes: “Seriously, take 9-24 and go fly fishing or run a marathon or just flip to the best games on the big screen. Here is the list of Big Ten opponents that week — Western Michigan @ Illinois (not playing Iowa, so don’t worry), Indiana @ North Texas (@ North Texas?), Louisana-Monroe at Iowa (if this is close, all bets are off), San Diego State at Michigan (semi-interesting), Central Michigan at Michigan State (no Dan LeFevour), North Dakota State at Minnesota (revenge game for ‘Sota), Nebraska at Wyoming (I love Wyoming for national parks not so much for football), Colorado at Ohio State (intriguing, but OSU rout), Eastern Michigan at Penn State (meet PSU RB Silas Redd, your Big Ten offensive POW) and South Dakota at Wisconsin (I see a lot of handoffs).” Good stuff there Marc.

Marc also offers his two cents on the Big Ten championship selections as well as providing an update on Iowa OL Dan Heiar who was involved in a car accident this spring. Marc quotes his Juco coach as guessing that Heiar will redshirt this year, which I agree with. He has three years to play two, and given what he has been through physically a redshirt for 2011 makes the most sense.

Here are some other offerings from Morehouse:
On the Line | Trinca-Pasat
On the Line | Brandon Scherff

The Gazette’s Scott Dochterman has some quotes from Big Ten Commish Jim Delany from yesterday’s announcements about Indianapolis being chosen to host the Big Ten’s championship football game for the first four years at this link. There are a lot of fans who have voiced their opinions related to this selection, and many wish the game would be played outdoors.

I felt Indianapolis would be the choice, and I think in the long run it will prove to be the right call and it will remain there…

Dan Gable is going to be honored with a 7-foot statue of his likeness being placed on display outside of Carver Hawkeye Arena….this is a good move, and this is the kind of coach you give a make a statue of. Sorry, but Alabama’s creation of a Nick Saban statue is quite premature. First, I am not a Nick Saban fan. I realize Alabama creates statues of National Title winning coaches…Gene Stallings won one, has one and led the Crimson Tide to significant NCAA sanctions..yet the statue stands.

Gable? He is one of the greatest coaches in the history of sport, he is now retired and it’s a great time to honor the man who is truly a living legend. He basically turned Carver Hawkeye Arena into the most feared venue in all of wrestling, The Coliseum of Amateur Wrestling…and it still carries on to this day….

This one slipped past me last week…Iowa’s 2011 basketball recruiting class is ranked 9th in the Big Ten by Rivals.com. Not surprising, as there’s not a lot of star power…but I really like the class and think it fits well with what Fran McCaffery is putting together as well as where Iowa has some needs…

Finally, it’s 86 days until Iowa kicks off its season and current players and some freshman are back on campus for summer drills…it’s also about 51 days until the Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon takes place in Chicago…that is hard to believe.

The University of Iowa wrestling team placed third and crowned five All-Americans at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Penn State snaps Iowa's streak at three titles in a row.

The University of Iowa wrestling team placed third and crowned five All-Americans at the 2011 NCAA Championships Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The Hawkeyes scored 86.5 points to finish behind champion Penn State (107.5) and runner-up Cornell (93.5). The three-day tournament attendance total of 104,260 set a new NCAA Division I record.

Hawkeye sophomore Matt McDonough, who was competing in his second-straight 125-pound NCAA final, lost a 7-1 decision to top-seeded and undefeated Anthony Robles to open the final session. Robles took a 7-0 first-period lead on a takedown and five nearfall points. McDonough chose neutral to start the second period, but was unable to score. Robles chose down to start the third period, and was warned twice for stalling, resulting in a point for McDonough. The Iowa sophomore ended the season with a 27-2 record, tallying a 64-3 mark in his two-year Hawkeye career.

“You have to be more aware; know what you’re getting yourself into,” said McDonough. “Go out there to scrap. You can’t come out in the first two minutes and feel things out when you’re in that stage and take something away from every experience. You have to take something away from this. As much as it stings, you still have to take something away from it.”

Iowa finished the 2010-11 season with five All-Americans and two Big Ten Champions. Iowa earned its fourth straight Big Ten regular season title with a perfect 8-0 conference record and extended its unbeaten dual winning streak to 77 by posting a 15-0-1 overall dual mark. The Hawkeyes’ perfect 8-0 home record marked the program’s 19th undefeated season at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

He ended the tournament with a fourth-place finish after Minnesota’s Michael Thorn was awarded a takedown in the closing seconds of the third-place match.
Matt McDonough is Iowa's lone finalist; Hawkeyes in third place with Penn State comfortably in the lead

University of Iowa 125-pound sophomore Matt McDonough advanced to his second-straight NCAA Championship final Friday night at the Wells Fargo Center with his 3-1 semifinal win over Northwestern’s Brandon Precin. The Hawkeyes are in third place in the team race with 74 points, trailing second-place Cornell by one. Penn State leads the team race with 92.5. All three teams have five wrestlers still alive in the tournament.

McDonough, who is the defending NCAA Champion at 125, collected his 16th straight victory with his win over Precin. After a scoreless first period, Precin escaped in the second frame to take a 1-0 lead. McDonough, who posted a 3-1 decision over Precin for the 2011 Big Ten title, responded with a takedown to take a 2-1 lead. After starting down in the third period, McDonough added one more escape for the win. The Hawkeye sophomore will face top-seeded Anthony Robles of Arizona State in the NCAA finals. It will be the first collegiate meeting between McDonough and Robles.

Hawkeye junior Montell Marion (141) and sophomore Grant Gambrall (184) lost their semifinal bouts and will wrestle in the consolation bracket Saturday morning. Marion lost a 3-3 decision to top-seeded Kellen Russell of Michigan in the second tiebreak period, based on Russell’s accumulated riding time advantage. Gambrall trailed #9 seed Quentin Wright of Penn State, 8-0 in the second period before Wright took the Hawkeye sophomore to his back and recorded the fall in 3:53. Marion will face #10 seed Todd Schavrien of Missouri in the consolation semifinals, while Gambrall will wrestle #5 seed Joe LeBlanc of Wyoming. Gambrall knocked LeBlanc into the consolation bracket with an 8-3 victory in their second round match.

Iowa senior Luke Lofthouse (197) and redshirt freshman Derek St. John (157) went 2-0 Friday night to advance to Saturday’s consolation semifinals and earn their first All-America honor. Lofthouse recorded his 55th career win with a 3-1 decision over #11 Jerome Ward of Iowa State, and then posted a 10-2 major decision over #8 Matt Powless of Indiana. St. John opened the night with a 3-1 decision over Buffalo’s Mark Lewandowski, and followed with a 9-4 win over #7 Bryce Saddoris of Navy. Both Hawkeyes will face Big Ten opponents in their consolation semifinal. Lofthouse will wrestle #3 Trevor Brandvold of Wisconsin, while St. John will face #8 Jason Welch of Northwestern.

After solid runs in the consolation bracket, Hawkeye redshirt freshman Tony Ramos (133) and senior Aaron Janssen (165) were eliminated from the tournament one match shy of All-America status. Ramos lost an 8-7 decision to #5 Lou Ruggirello of Hofstra in the consolation fourth round, while Janssen lost 9-6 to #7 Shane Onufer of Wyoming. Ramos scored three third-period takedowns to tie the score 7-7, but Ruggirello converted his 4:30 of riding time into the winning point. Janssen led 5-3 after the first period, but Onufer responded with two second-period takedowns and rode Janssen the entire third period for the win. Ramos ends the season with a 25-6 record, while Janssen ends the season with a 28-9 record and his Hawkeye career with a 57-23 mark.

The Iowa wrestling team sends three athletes to tonight's semifinals and is in third place

The University of Iowa advanced three wrestlers to the semifinals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships Friday morning at the Wells Fargo Center. Sophomores Matt McDonough (125) and Grant Gambrall (184), and junior Montell Marion scored quarterfinal victories to advance to Friday night’s semis. All three wrestlers are guaranteed All-America status. An additional four Hawkeyes are still competing in the consolation round.

Iowa sits in third place in the team standings with 52 points. Cornell leads with 61 points. Penn State trails the Big Red with 60.5 points. Cornell has five wrestlers remaining, four in the semifinals. Penn State has four wrestlers alive in the championship bracket and three in the consolation round.

McDonough, the defending 125-pound NCAA champion, opened the third session with an 11-0 major decision over seventh-seeded Ryan Mango of Stanford. The second-seeded Hawkeye racked up three takedowns and three nearfall points en route to his third bonus-point victory of the tournament. He’ll face third-seeded Brandon Precin of Northwestern in the semis. McDonough owns a 2-1 record against Precin this season. McDonough has won the last two meetings, including a pin in the Iowa-Northwestern dual and a 3-1 decision in the Big Ten championship finals.

The fifth-seeded Marion scored a takedown as time expired to record an 8-7 win over Illinois’ fourth-seeded Jimmy Kennedy. Last year’s NCAA runner-up at 141 pounds, Marion scored six third-period points to erase a 4-0 deficit. Marion trailed 5-2 after two periods before chasing Kennedy to the edge of the mat and picking up a takedown and stalling point to tie the match, 5-5. Facing a riding-time deficit, Marion cut Kennedy loose before recording another stalling point and takedown on the edge of the mat as time expired. Kennedy held on to the riding time point, but Marion advanced the 141-pound semis with the 8-7 decision. Marion will face top-seeded Kellen Russell of Michigan in the semifinals.

Gambrall used two overtime periods to upset Wisconsin’s 5th-seeded Travis Rutt, 4-2. The wrestlers traded escapes during regulation and then again in the first overtime period before the 12th-seeded Gambrall turned a reversal in the second tiebreak to earn the 4-2 win. Gambrall will face No. 9 Quentin Wright in Friday’s 184-pound semifinal.

Redshirt freshman Derek St. John (157) and senior Luke Lofthouse (197) both fell in the quarterfinals and will need to record one consolation victory to secure All-America honors. St. John, the tournament’s No. 6 seed, dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 3 David Taylor (PSU) and No. 5 Lofthouse lost a 10-3 decision to Kent State’s No. 4 Dustin Kilgore.

Redshirt freshman Tony Ramos (133) and senior Aaron Janssen (165) each posted 2-0 records Friday morning to remain alive in the consolation round. Ramos used seven takedowns to post an early morning 21-4 win over Kent State’s Tyler Small before scoring a sudden victory 7-5 decision over Minnesota’s David Thorn. Janssen notched 11 takedowns in his 23-8 tech. fall over Binghamton’s John Lister. He later used a pair of takedowns to defeat Cornell’s Justin Kerber, a former high school teammate, 6-2. Both wrestlers are one victory away from earning All-America honors.

Junior Blake Rasing (HWT) and sophomore Ethen Lofthouse (174) were both knocked from the tournament following losses in Friday’s wrestle backs. The seventh-seeded Rasing fell to No. 4 Dominick Russo III of Rutgers 8-6. Ethen Lofthouse, the tournament’s No. 9 seed, dropped a 6-5 decision to Boston’s Hunter Meys. Rasing’s season ends with a Big Ten title and an 18-7 record. Ethen Lofthouse finished his redshirt freshman season with a 20-10 mark.

Iowa sends nine qualifiers to nationals next week and learned where they were seeded on Wednesday.

The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team will send nine qualifiers to Philadelphia, Pa., next week for the 2011 NCAA Championships. The event will be held March 17-19 at Wells Fargo Arena. The official tournament brackets were released Wednesday night by the NCAA.

Iowa is one of four schools to qualify nine wrestlers, while Boise State and Oklahoma State each qualified their entire 10-man lineup. Cornell, Minnesota and Missouri qualified nine competitors each. Seven schools qualified eight wrestlers, including Lehigh, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, Penn State and Rutgers. It is the 11th time in school history that the Hawkeyes have qualified nine wrestlers for the national tournament. Iowa has won 23 NCAA team titles and is the three-time defending team champion.

All nine of Iowa’s NCAA qualifiers earned seeds for the national tournament. Sophomore Matt McDonough, who is the defending NCAA champion at 125 pounds, is Iowa’s top-seeded competitor, earning the #2 seed at that weight class. SeniorLuke Lofthouse is seeded fifth at 197, while 2010 NCAA finalist Montell Marion is seeded fifth at 141. Hawkeye redshirt freshmen Tony Ramos (133) and Derek St. John (157) each earned the sixth seed, while junior Blake Rasing is seeded seventh at heavyweight. Also earning tournament seeds for the Hawkeyes are redshirt freshman Ethen Lofthouse (174-#9), senior Aaron Janssen (165-#11) and sophomore Grant Gambrall (184-#12). McDonough and Marion are the only two Hawkeye qualifiers with previous NCAA tournament experience.

McDonough and Rasing enter the tournament on winning streaks after collecting individual titles at the 2011 Big Ten Championships last weekend in Evanston, Ill. McDonough is 23-1 this season, has won his last 12 matches and leads the Hawkeyes with 13 pins. Rasing has won his last six bouts and boasts a season mark of 17-5. His first round opponent will be intra-state rival Kyle Simonson of Iowa State. Rasing posted a 2-0 decision over Simonson at the dual in Iowa City in December.

St. John and Luke Lofthouse each finished second at the 2011 Big Ten meet. St. John is 19-4 this season and has won seven of his last eight bouts, while Lofthouse has won nine of his last 10 matches for a 20-5 season record.

Ramos, Janssen and Ethen Lofthouse each battled back through the consolation bracket to place third at last weekend’s conference meet. Ramos has won 14 of his last 15 bouts, and has a 21-4 record. He will be wrestling in one of Iowa’s two preliminary, or pigtail, matches of the NCAA tournament. Janssen is 25-7 this season, while Lofthouse has a 19-8 record.

Marion placed fourth at the Big Ten meet, while Gambrall placed fifth. Marion, who was reinstated to the Hawkeye wrestling team in January after being suspended from the team in May 2010, has a 9-3 record. Gambrall, who will be wrestling in Iowa’s other pigtail bout, is 19-7 this season.

Competition at the 2011 NCAA Championships will kick off at 10 a.m. (CT) March 17.

A look at the post conference tournament W.I.N. Wrestling rankings. Hawkeyes improving their chances at nationals.

Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN) is releasing its final Tournament Power Index (TPI) and individual rankings following last weekend’s national qualifying tournaments.

The WIN TPI is compiled by awarding points to each team for the ranked wrestlers they have in WIN’s current individual rankings that can be found below in all 10 weight classes. In a sense, it suggests how many points these teams could score at this year’s NCAA tournament, March 17-19, in Philadelphia.

Teams are awarded points based on how many potential All-Americans (Top 8 wrestlers) they could have and get advancement points for wrestlers ranked No. 9-20. The order of teams in the TPI vary greatly from dual meet rankings, as some teams have a number of highly-ranked individuals but may have holes in their dual meet line-up.

Point totals associated with individual rankings are as followed: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12. 5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5); 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will not match the final NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points for pins, technical falls, major decisions and forfeits/defaults.

The rankings may include wrestlers who are currently injured, but are expected to be back for the 2011 postseason. Inactivity may also result in a wrestler dropping in the rankings. The source of the individual records is the NWCAOnline.com Scorebook.

WIN Magazine has released their latest rankings. See how the Hawkeyes fare

W.I.N. Wrestling has released their 2/21 rankings. This first set is their Tournament Power Index, and predicts how teams would fare at nationals based on their individual weight rankings and the wrestlers performing to that placement at nationals. The single digit number after a school’s name is the number projected All Americans that school has (Top 8 ranking). The number to the right would be the total projected points those ‘seeded’ wrestlers would earn at nationals.

1	Cornell (6) 87.5
2	Oklahoma State (6) 74.5
3	Penn State	(6) 72.5
4	Boise State	(4) 61.5
5	Iowa (4) 52.5
6	Wisconsin (3) 39
7	Minnesota (4) 38
8	Oklahoma (3) 37.5
9	American (2) 35.5
10	Lehigh (2) 34.5
11	Iowa State (2) 33

WIN has Iowa ranked #2 in their dual rankings, which for all intents and purposes holds no more value now that the dual season is complete. It’s tournament wrestling for the rest of the season.

Here are WIN’s rankings for the Iowa wrestling team:

125: Matt McDonough (1st)
133: Tony Ramos (10th)
141: Montell Marion (4th)
149: Mark Ballweg (not ranked)
157: Derek St John (8th)
165: Aaron Janssen (18th)
174: Ethen Lofthouse (13th)
184: Grant Gambrell (11th)
197: Luke Lofthouse (7th)
HWT: Blake Rasing (not ranked)

NOTES: McDonough is the reigning national champion at 125 pounds and has just one loss this season…Marion was the runner up last year at 141 and has been back on the mat for Iowa since late January…Ballweg was wrestling 141 most of the year and if he can qualify for nationals, the three weeks of training will help him get more comfortable at his weight and he might be able to do some damage in wrestlebacks at nationals….Ramos has shown the ability to wrestle higher than his seed…

Second ranked Iowa won 9 of 10 matches in beating Purdue 37-3 on the mat Friday night in Indiana

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — The second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team improved to 13-0-1 (6-0 Big Ten) with a 37-3 victory over No. 23 Purdue (6-8-1, 1-4) Friday night at Penn High School in Mishawaka, IN. The Hawkeyes won nine of 10 bouts, scored bonus points in eight of the wins, and posted a 46-3 takedown advantage to extend their unbeaten streak to 75 duals. Head Coach Tom Brands collected his 95th win at Iowa and 35th win in the Big Ten.

For the second time this season, Iowa started a dual at 184 pounds. Sophomore Grant Gambrall posted his fifth-straight win with a 12-3 major decision over Purdue back-up Patrick Kissel. Boilermaker starters A.J. Kissel, who is ranked eighth in the nation at 184, Logan Brown, who is ranked between fifth and 10th at 197, and heavyweight Roger Vukobratovich were out of the lineup due to injury. Iowa senior Luke Lofthouse followed with an eight-takedown performance for an 18-6 major decision over David Pisarcik at 197. Hawkeye junior heavyweight Blake Rasing followed with his third major decision of the season, beating Boilermaker Alex White, 12-3.

Hawkeye sophomore Matt McDonough collected his fifth straight pin and 55th career victory when he decked Camden Eppert in 4:28. McDonough, who improved to 18-1 on the season, is 14-0 in duals at 125. He leads the team with 10 pins. Iowa redshirt freshman Tony Ramos remains undefeated in dual competition (10-0) with his 18-6 major decision over Purdue’s Akif Eren at 133. Ramos tallied eight takedowns to collect his ninth straight win and improve to 16-3 on the season. Hawkeye junior Montell Marion and sophomore Mark Ballweg posted major decisions at 141 and 149, respectively, to give Iowa 30-0 lead.

Purdue senior Colton Salazar scored the first Boilermaker takedown of the evening early in the 157-pound match, but that was the only one Hawkeye redshirt freshman Derek St. John allowed. St. John regained the lead by the end of the first frame, and added two more takedowns in the match for the 9-4 decision.

Hawkeye senior Aaron Janssen collected his 45th career victory with a 17-6 major decision over Kyle Mosier at 165. Iowa had the chance for the shut-out, but eighth-ranked Luke Manuel scored two third-period takedowns to beat Hawkeye redshirt freshman Ethen Lofthouse, 6-5, in the final bout of the night. Lofthouse is ranked 11th in the nation.

Up next for Iowa is its final home meet of the season. The Hawkeyes will host No. 10 Michigan (10-4, 5-2 Big Ten) Sunday at 1 p.m. on Mediacom Mat at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The dual will be televised live on Iowa Public Television. Iowa will honor its six seniors - Matt Ballweg, Aaron Janssen, Jake Kerr, Brooks Kopsa, Luke Lofthouse and Ethan Sebert – who will be making their final collegiate appearance at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
