AJ Epenesa Commits to Iowa

The Hawkeyes are hosting a number of juniors on Sunday and they were able to get things kicked off in amazing fashion:

Epenesa is one of the Top Rated prospects in the nation (as well as the #1 Strong Side Defensive End) for the Class of 2017. Iowa was the first school to offer him a scholarship in June of 2014 and they figured to be in the mix until the end for this legacy prospects.

AJ’s father is Epenesa Epenesa, who played for Hayden Fry in the late 1990’s. AJ grew up in a Hawkeye household and has rooted for Iowa since he was in diapers.

He ranks as the 13th best player in the nation according to a composite rankings system which averages 247Sports, Rivals.com and Scout.com. He is 247Sports’ #2 player in the nation regardless of position.

He has the highest recruiting ranking at the time of his commitment as any Iowa prospect since Willie Guy in 1990.

His commitment on Iowa’s first Junior Day of the season is no accident, as he will help to form a ‘gravity’ for the Class of 2017 that other prospects may coalesce around, the way things happened with Jake Christensen in the Class of 2005, which was Iowa’s highest rated recruiting class in 25 years.

Epenesa cannot sign a binding letter of intent until February of 2017 and he is the 5th known commitment for the Class of 2017.
