Hawks in the NFL: Week 13

December 4, 2018

Written by Sean Neugent

It was both a good and bad week for former Hawks. First, the bad: injuries to some key players. The good: the 2017 and 2018 Hawkeyes draft class continues to wow the league. Most notable: see CB Desmond King on Sunday Night Football.

All this and more in Hawks in the NFL: Week 13.

Let’s span the NFL:

Seahawks 43, 49ers 16: TE George Kittle continues to be one of the few good outliers for the 49ers this season. During Sunday’s defeat, Kittle caught six balls on nine targets for 70 yards.

Currently, Kittle ranks in the top 20 for yards with 893 on 62 receptions. His 14.4 yards per catch rank eighth for players with 50-plus receptions.

Rams 30, Lions 16: OL Austin Blythe is having a Pro Bowl type year and is helping the Rams dominate in the NFC. He did have a miscue when he was called for his first holding penalty of the year in the win over the Lions. Still, he looks every bit worthy of a Pro Bowl vote.

Cardinals 20, Packers 17: OL Bryan Bulaga injured his knee during a play resulting in a touchdown and did not return. Defensively, rookie CB Josh Jackson was credited with one passed defended and two tackles in the loss. Injured a few weeks ago, DE Mike Daniels was put on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the season.

Furthermore, the Packers will have a new interim coach. After yet another loss on Sunday, the Packers management fired Mike McCarthy after the game and promoted Joe Philbin, who is a former Hawkeyes offensive line coach under Kirk Ferentz.

Patriots 24, Vikings 10: For the Patriots, DE Adrian Clayborn did not record any stats.

For the Vikings, DT Jaleel Johnson had two assisted tackles in the loss.

Giants 30, Bears 27 (OT): OL James Daniels continues to play well in his rookie year. On 4th and Goal, DL Akiem Hicks played RB and ran a straightforward dive behind Daniels for a touchdown. The Bears ended up with a tough loss in overtime, but remain in first in the NFC North.

Chiefs 40, Raiders 33: LB Anthony Hitchens finished with a game-high 10 total tackles. He exited with a quad injury in the first half, but resumed play in the second half.

Dolphins 21, Bills 17: S Micah Hyde made a nice play to intercept a deep pass to WR Kenny Stills. It was Hyde’s second interception of the year. He also added four tackles in the loss.

Broncos 23, Bengals 10: LB Josey Jewell collected one tackle before leaving with an ankle injury. He was covering TE C.J. Uzomah on the incomplete pass before hobbling off the field. The rookie has played well for the Broncos, who are riding a three-game win streak. TBD on if Jewell will miss any time, but right now is listed as day to day.

Chargers 33, Steelers 30: Down 23-15, CB Desmond King returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown on Sunday Night Football. The Chargers then converted a two-point conversion to knot the game at 23. He also had 10 tackles and defended two passes.

Some of his former Iowa teammates were excited:

“Desmond King is a heck of a football player, that is the best way I can describe him,” says Philip Rivers, the Chargers QB. “That was the ultimate compliment if my dad called you a heck of a football player, so that is the way I look at it too. He is a heck of a football player and I’m glad he’s on our side.”

HawkeyeNation.com’s Week 13 Game Ball:

Desmond King is a heck of a football player and made a big play that impacted the outcome of Sunday night’s game in Pittsburgh, a place they have rarely won at. The second-year player continues to impress.
