A Veterans Day Salute

The game did not go the way Iowa fans would have liked, but there was something much bigger happening in Iowa City on Saturday. It was Military Appreciation Day at Kinnick Stadium in honor of Veterans Day. The University of Iowa Athletics Department did a nice job of honoring veterans with a whole host of events throughout the game.

It started with the University of Iowa Athletics Ticket Office, which offered active duty and veteran military members, law enforcement officials and firefighters tickets at no cost.

Always a crowd pleaser, a flyover was performed by three naval pilots prior to the game, including Lieutenant Jeff Lentz, a West Des Moines native and graduate of Valley High School. Mr. Lentz is stationed at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia and currently attached to Strike Fighter Squadron 103 (VFA-103), nicknamed the Jolly Rogers. He returned to his home state prior to Veterans Day. During the trip, Lentz, along with the other Navy Pilots also visited the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital on Friday. Each of these naval pilots were honored during the third quarter.

During the game, the players wore helmets with the number “24”, an homage to Nile Kinnick. Kinnick died serving in World War II. On the other side, the Tigerhawk was shown in red, white and blue.

Other events included:

  • Four military vehicles in KFP
  • A large American flag for the national anthem, which was held by UI ROTC and veterans
  • Two military hero recognitions
  • Senior ROTC cadet recognition
  • Iowa distinguished veteran award winner recognition
  • The push up crew was performed by the UI ROTC in the south end zone
