You probably could count the number of five-star prospects visiting Iowa during the last 20 years on one hand. Those types tend to check out Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina and other blue blood programs.

Keion Brooks is the outlier. The Indiana small forward feels a close connection to the Hawkeyes, a relationship built up over time, starting before the big boys came calling.

The electric prospect unofficially visited them on Wednesday. He was impressed.

“The thing that I liked the most was seeing that it’s a great campus with great people,” Brooks told HN.

Rivals, 247 and ESPN all rank Brooks (6-8, 210) as a five-star recruit. Rivals sees the Fort Wayne North Side High and Indy Heat star as the No. 19 overall recruit nationally in the ’19 class. He’s at 22 for 247 and No. 25 by ESPN.

Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Purdue, UCLA and many others have offered him a scholarship. Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Texas, North Carolina, Indiana, UCLA, Georgetown, Purdue and Kentucky made up his Top 10, which he released on June 10.

Despite an impressive list of schools Iowa doesn’t often beat out for recruits, Brooks said he can see himself ending up with the Hawkeyes.

“The people that are there seem to truly care about the student-athletes. That’s what you want when you go to a school, to know people really care,” he said.

Brooks saw the campus and facilities. He met with the coaches, including his main recruiter, Andrew Francis, and the head man, Fran McCaffery.

“They’ve been recruiting me for a long time, and we’ve built a great relationship,” Brooks said.

The staff shared its vision for him.

“We talked about how they would use me if I was to attend there. They would move me around and use my versatility,” he said.

Brooks has become friends with ’19 Iowa commitment Patrick McCaffery, Fran’s son. They attended the USA tryouts and Top 100 camps together. They hung out during his Hawkeye visit.

“Patrick and I have a good relationship. We talked about basketball, mainly. It’s what we’ve been doing during the spring and summer,” Brooks said.

Brooks, who wants to study Business in college, said he has no timetable for a commitment.

“I’m just trying to make sure I get to see the programs in depth before making a decision,” he said.

His father, Keion Brooks Sr., starred at Wright State during the late ’90s. He averaged 20.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.8 steals as a senior in ’98-99.
